Since hearing about this pass we wanted to trek over it. We tried early in June from the Chelan side after camping at 25 mile creek.

This road is not difficult but extremely rewarding with the views!

Uh oh! There’s still snow on the road.

Point of go-no-further… wet snow on top of mud, three amigos brightly shining and solo, yeah, not gonna do it.

So we waited exactly two weeks and decided to camp on the Entiat side of the pass…

Then it was off to tackle Shady.

The forest changes quickly and dramatically between burnt to a crisp and very lush.

Total time over the pass was about 3 hours, you could do this faster, but I would ask you… why?

A hidden nugget that some of the locals literally told me not to share is Silver Falls. It’s up the Entiat near the entrance to Shady Pass and has a great 1.5 mi kid-friendly hiking trail. Enjoy, and please don’t tell anybody else. ;-)

Nice writeup. I hiked and drove all over that ridge in the summer of 1992 while working for the US Forest Service. Back then, it was all lush and dense forest. It's really a shame they had that big fire.

Thanks for the write-up. I need to get back on my blog too.

I find it quite interesting that my avatar seems to be some sort of devil and Craig's is looking at mine with disdain. Is this some random event or is something more sinister afoot?

I just thought it was funny that my avatar probably represents what my internet image is that most people have of me, especially those who haven't met me in person.

Thanks for taking the time not only to write about great scenery, but to take good pictures of great scenery. Looks like a fun trip. If you are interested in another one that is similar, look up the Lolo Trail.

The Lolo Trail (or motorway) runs parallel to and just north of Hwy 12 in Idaho.

Here's a link to a blog of the Lolo trip that I did with Mark and Carl. http://northwestoverlandsociety.org/Discussions/tabid/166/forumid/4/tpage/1/view/topic/postid/40699/Default.aspx#40769
