I've just ordered one of these handy thingies

http://www.roadlessgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?page=TOY/PROD/M/RG631

While it looks fairly simple with just some butt connectors on some switches, I'd like to see how it's set up.  It is said they work well and would simplify winching especially when it's raining.

I keep telling myself I'm going to either order a wireless one, or hook it up to my steering wheel radio controls but I never seem to get around to it.

That's kinda an ugly switch though. Olympic 4x4 sells switches that match your ARB switches but are labelled with the appropriate accessory. They have a nice winch one, and a winch master on/off that you could probably just swap in place of the one you just bought (but use the wiring).

That is awesome. Let me know how well you like it. There is a guy in Vancouver that wired his rear window washer toggle to run the winch in his RRC. It is on the steering column and pushing in reals our, pulling towards reals in. Pretty cool setup. (my rear window washer/wiper has not worked for years)

With this, I bet you could tie into that fairly easily.

that plate doesn't have to be used  and I don't plan on using it, just the switches and knowledge of how to wire.  they have this example which is more ugly.    Currently I don't have any ARB switches so it's a moot point.  I do have some light switches but this will be mounted in another location so I'm not so worried about looks.  Having it clearly labeled is my main thing, as I couldn't figure out Chris' winch controller without labels.

I plan to have Scott mount this low near the HellRoaring swith and swap out the ARM switch with a glowing one, so you know it's armed.  the washer control would be another good idea.  maybe there's a way to put in another switch that lets you use the rear washer normally then hit 'arm' and it works as your winch controller.   but the more I think about how cool that is, the more I think about the complexity it adds and go the other route.

Yeah, that sound complex. I was going to do a simple Volume Up = IN, and Volume Down = Out. It is a straightforward wiring job on my truck. The ARM button would be separate.

sounds good,Craig, the only concern I would have is while you are turning your wheel, or while it is already turned, and you're trying to winch. I guess in that case you just would use the old controller.

That's true, turning would be a problem.

So far, I've been holding off because I think I'll want to use the steering controls to control my carputer (stereo).

Wiring is really a smple task. I have been considering a covered switch (http://www.turbobits.co.uk/acatalog/dynotune_703_covered_racing_switch.html) for arming and just a simple momentary on-off-on for control.

I built my own with a rocker switch imbedded on the front of my center console, right near my hip. Easy to reach, almost impossible to notice (unlike a big red plate). I also put in a "kill" or "arm" switch on my binnacle. The lowest switch was just a blank so I replaced it with a cruise control switch and a blank face plate with a custom "W" on it. That way the inside switch only works when it is armed. I can also push the arm switch to see if it lights up so I know if I have power to the winch. This is convenient since there is a kill switch in my engine compartment for the power cable to the winch. If things start to look hairy, I can just arm the internal rocker switch real quick to let me know if I remembered to enable the winch.

I can post a pic or two later.

I went ahead and ordered the Roadless gear plate in black rather than red. It looks like simple blade connectors so I can just hook up the other switches when I am ready to carve more holes in my dash (which is a nuisance in the RRC due to the metal behind the plastic).

Great find Peter. For $29, it seems much easier than trying to build/figure out the wiring myself. I'd probably invest at least half that in the materials.

I may do the "Batteries DPDT" switch to control my hellroaring system as well. Y'all saved me a bunch of research!

If you figure out how to do the Hellroaring, let me know as I have one too. I'm trying to figure it out but my mind won't work.

With the HR switch, it's on Auto when in the middle, down is off and up is on. I'd just want to make sure Auto still works. Off and On I can conceptualize. When the truck is on and it's on Auto, there is power through the switch to the little LED, so I think you'd have to kinda invert how things work. If you figure it out, let me know.

Rick, I think I'll put in the kill switch as well. that's a good idea.

Just to clarify, I have a kill switch in the engine compartment for the entire winch. I also have kill switch on the dash for the internal winch control to keep me from reaching for the rear window control and accidentally spooling out winch line.

One more thing, I got the engine campartment kill switch at West Marine. It has the following ratings:

Rated 350A continuous/600A Intermittent/700A Cranking/1750A Inrush

They have one that is slightly beefier now.

I couldn't find any "winch cut-off switch" out there that could handle the listed maximum current pull for the Pierce or the max that might be available to pull if I finally put in a dual battery setup. This switch meets the need.
