| So i've been toying with the idea of making my own snorkel. Has anyone done this before? I've been doing alot of reading on this and have found that it shouldn't be difficult. Most important is the size of tubing you utilize and also making sure everything is tight and secure. I talked to some guys who have fabbed their own on other trucks and I like the fact I can pick and choose where to mount it to and a few other variables. I'm in the midst of illustrating some plans. Which I'll post here. Thanks guys. AJ |

| Andy, Britt, that was actually what I was thinking. Using my friends tube bender and welder to fab my own. I ultimatley do not want this to look like crap.
Josh, for sure, i'm always down to have friends help out with projects, or just kick back and drink a few and spit ball ideas on stuff.

| Yes, but it doesn't necessarily have to be bent to look good. BP |

| AJ, Can you take pictures along the way and help me with a cookbook? Will you use 2 inch or 3 inch tubing?
I have the pattern for cutting out a hole on the shroud for a Mantec snorkel if you want it. It requires bending the tubing though and I have not been brave enough to do it. Also, what kind of flex tubing are you going to use under the hood?

| Britt, I guess if it works great and looks horrible, I wouldn't care. HA!
You've never heard of spit balling ideas? haha.
Todd, yeah, i'd be more than happy do document the experiment. I'd like to look at that mantec plan to see if it conicides with what i'm thinking. Also as far as the flex tubing, I was thinking of going to these guys www.crushproof.com/air.html |

I'm going with copper downspout pipe. I think the verdegris will look nice on a Roman Bronze truck.

| The only problem with using these guys Todd is quantities. I'm hoping that they will have what i'm looking for in a sample or extra piece.
It's exactly what I want, but I haven't heard back from them yet. So i'll keep you posted. AJ |

| I'm reviving this project. I never did get anything done with my RRC's snorkel but am thinking of applying what I was going to do to my DI. So this is what i'm thinking.
I've found some crush proof air intake hose that is 3" dia that I can pick up a 11' piece for around $100. I'm willing to split this apart for anyone else who would want a piece as well as I only should need 3-3.5' of it. I also found that you can buy Safari Snorkel Air Rams as well as Pre-Filters that fit. I will be picking one of those as well as I haven't found a way to build a suitable good looking air ram.
I do plan on using PVC piping to make the tube from. I know that everyone is rolling their eyes, but I plan on "beautifying" the PVC making sure it's good looking and all sealed and proper. I will be documenting the build as well. Right now i'm still planning so input from anyone who has done such a build is appreciated.
All in all it should cost me around 200 to make.
Thanks,
AJ |

| not sure how handy you are but an idea ive toyed around with is lost foam with fiberglass. Basically build a solid styrafoam model of how you want the snorkle to be. The lay it up in fiberglass or carbon fiber. when done cut a hole in it and dump in some paint thinner. the foam disolves and the shell is still there. I would have done this but i already have a snorkle on my rig |

| That looks exactly like something I would do. I like it!
My only question on snorkels has been, why is the intake always pointed forward? In my mind I always thing to point it backward, that way if you do hit a puddle hard no water could splash into it. I don't think the engine would have any issues pulling in air, even at speed on the highway, if the intake were pointed backward.
I don't think you did it wrong Bob, I have just always wondered........ |
