I have a chirp or sqeak that happens as soon as the truck starts rolling, wether I'm on the gas or off the gas the squeak is there - Now, If I lightly press on the brake the squeak changes, and if I brake fully as if to stop the squeak goes away - I don't have any vibrations.

This started on the 4th of july, on july 2nd and 3rd I went on an overnight camping trip and pushed the truck through tire height bodies of water filled with loose gravel and rocks of all sizes, big and small.

Does this sound like the effin driveshaft? I have time today to lift the truck up on jackstands, what do I look for play in?

Driveshaft could be it but you would still have torque applied to the driveshaft even when on the brakes.

I had a similar strange noise once and it turned out to be a small pebble that was wedged up in the brake caliper. I don't know if it was actually between the pad and the rotor or just in the caliper area. When I started to remove the brakes to check, it just fell out of some magical place and the noise went away.

This was after a day of deep muddy water crossings up above Index.

Wouldn't the driveshaft be spinning as long as the wheels are spinning and have traction? So, that is a real possibility. Where is it coming from (generally)?

Ok, here's another one I still get the chirp squeak coasting in neutral does that eliminate change anything? Going froom drive to neutral doesn't change the squeak but applying the brake still changes the sound

I had the same issue several times with a chunk of gravel that was stuck in the sheet metal protector thingy and brake rotor. First time it really freaked me out, now I know to stop, turn the wheels so it is easy to reach behind the tire and bang on the sheet metal. It falls right out.

I had a bit of that after that little muddin sesion that took out my front end , kept hearing it after i sprayed it all off it turned out to be a little pebble in the brakes somewhere ,kinda sounded like a metel to metel sound as if i was down a pad but not as bad

I have to agree with Rick and Todd and Jason - this definitely sounds like small rock in brake caliper area.. Can you identify where the noise is coming from (ie Right Rear, Front Left, or drive shaft area)?

As long as they don't come back and say you have a warped rotor or something like that. Les Schwab is pretty good though, I wouldn;t expect it from them.

I just did the break job 2 weekends ago using all oem parts - it definitely sounds like the front right - another test I did was in neutral gently pulling on the ebrake to slow me and the chirping didn't stop - so, I *think* its in the front - well see when I leave here what they say

Nik -

It is also possible they won't find it.. I doubt they do much more than pull the wheel when doing a 'free' inspection.. It is entirely possible that if it is a rock, it could be wedged where it won't be seen even with the wheel off. That would be a case of it "Falling from some magical place" as Rick put it.. Since it is coming from Front Right - if Les doesn't find it - I would take it home and remove the caliper on the Front Right.. Maybe a rock will appear from a magical place!

Pulling the e-brake applies pressure to the rear driveshaft and not to any of the four brake calipers. So if the e-brake doesn't change the tone and "Neutral" doesn't change the tone but pushing on the brakes DOES change the tone, you probably have some flotsam or jetsam or detritus in one of your calipers or the little mud shield that was designed to make sure nothing like this ever happens.

Whatever it is might just fall out on the Les Schwab garage floor when they do the inspection. Then you got to spend an hour relaxing rather than taking your calipers apart. Maybe.

Don't worry about it now - only worry about it when you get it back - if it's still making the noise.

I've heard a manager say to a Les Schwab employee, "Well, she *needs* this, this, and this but let's sell her an entire new system.  Now, go, and SELL IT!"  That was in Redmond, 7 years ago.  I haven't been back to Les Schwab since.

I agree that it sounds like the brakes, but don't discount the driveshaft.  I know you recently put a lift on, so things that were tired before putting the lift on could now be getting worn out.  Did you replace/rebuild/upgrade your driveshafts when you did the lift?

Putting the truck in neutral disengages the driveshaft from the transmission but it is still connected to the diff, which is connected to the axles, which is connected to the wheels.  The driveshaft will spin as long as the wheels are moving and have traction.  Ask Todd how I learned about this one.

Craig

The driveshaft continues to spin as long as you have at least one good bolt still holding on at either end. Right, Craig?

Yep, and they go "BANG! BANG! BANG!" when they don't have any bolts left.

Ask me how I know.

Oddly enough, the only bad experience I have had with Les Schwab was at the Redmond Wa location next to the Fred Meyer, that was 4-5 years ago. It blew me away as I have always liked them, regardless of the high prices on tires I have never heard of before.

Yeah, good point Craig... Check the drivelines. If the car has a shimmy-shimmy-cocopuff that is getting worse, it could be the driveline literally coming off like Craigs did.
