So I live in the Edmonds Lynnwood area and need a shop thats well versed with ARBs, and rover diffs, somewhere I can go with a  reference, for setup work I  need done, and done right, this week.

I want new Pinion and carrier bearings, and I want to be able to give them my third, in a bucket have them do the work. I can pull my third myself.

I want the tech to drive my rig so he knows what it sounds like. I want personal care and attention. i am leaving for colorado in 10 days, and am an idiot for having thought I'd drive down the way it is. I mean i can, nothing would likely happen but it may be just easier to do it.

I checked with local shops and they wont let me bring my third in. I am not working and cant afford the labor for wrok i can do with power tools myself. But i want a shop that is familiar with the correct bearings, and ideally has someone there who knows rovers, etc

Who is Seattles third member backlash and rover pinion depth guru?

My old ARB locked up and broke locked so i drove around for a few hundred miles locked, went to Six States in SLC after the rally last year in Moab, theyput in a new ARb unit in there its fine, but the shaft and pinion  making noise, theres a bit more metal shavings than I want to see, but things seem to be working fine, just darn noisy.

I know I can send it to Bill at GBR in utah but I want local. I want the depth checked, patterns checked, and i want a shop that knows toyotas and rovers. Thirds.

Who do ya know?

Gem-

I have had the pleasure of having Dan set up a third with an ARB. The locker works as expected and the install is quiet. The thing that impressed me the most is the level of neurotic detail that was put into setting it up. The housing had been cleaned, masked, and repainted before Dan's sweet, sweet torque wrench had even tightened a single nut. And man, those nuts are now very tight ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to say that Dan puts a lot of work into making sure every aspect of the third is gone over, by literally going over the entire third member to the point where he repainted it to make certain that it all left his hands in better shape than it arrived. You won't be disappointed.

Grant, yes, I can. I will just need to get some backlash criteria from Toyota.
Do you have any factory workshop manuals or things of the like?

Gem - I called and left you a message today. Call me when you can.

I met with Gem tonight and his rear diff isn't as bad as he thought. I will do some research tomorrow, but if my contacts see no problem with what I saw, we'll give him a green light to go to The National Rally.

With luck, I'll see him there!

Grant - I f you can bring the material to the M&G, I'll take it and digest it for a bit.

well I ran the natl rally there and back, drove to tahoe and san diego and am fine

I did order new gears 4.10s and will need help soon..I went with lucky8, since GBR has had QC issues of late, more than one guy had complained about noise and wear related vibrations, and I dont care for the spanish and chinese parts hes selling as R&P sets even if they are 4.14s

Ashcroft doesn't have a reverse cut front, but they are said to be good gears.

... Lucky8 has a UK made for the MOD rigs reverse cut setup so i went with that.

how many of you are pegging diffs?

I looked into it, but Dan and I decided it was overkill for trail runs. Maybe if I had a rock crawler.

Hey guys,

I want to add a ARB ocker in the rear of my rig... What is the thoughts on doing both front and rear since already having rig taken apart? SHould I add hd Axles whie I am at it? I run 33" muds now.. Don't want to be that guy with only buying some of the required parts since ......... I know I want to do the rear, but gears and the front? I would rather put money elsewhere. I have lift steel brake lines and center diff lock. But should I upgrade steereing rods etc? just want a reliable trail rig. I wi use it for camping a bunch and sometimes running a trail or two. Nothing too hardcore? THOUGHTS?

imho the stock steering is pretty flimsy, bent mine on ice

I wouldnt lock without going hd axles and cvs

I run the RTE drag link, the rovertracks offset tie rod from EE, you can buy HD axles for a d2 at lucky8 llc or at gbr.

I like having HD and having the ability to lock both axles, go as hard a line as you want, short of abuse of the skinny pedal whilst locked up its pretty reliable, any setup will break if you shock load it repeatedly

all said, dual TTs on a D2 get you darn far with no headaches so long as youre not into rock crawls it would do fine as well. for crawling, the control a locker gives you can be nice

Danny,

IIRC you have 285/75s.

If you aren't regearing, you can do one axle at a time.  If you have the money, upgrade the half shafts at the same time as you have the lockers installed.  If you don't have the money, Don't lock up the axles very often or you'll snap an axle.  If you are going someplace with high traction, like Moab, then absolutely get the HD axles at the same time.

Install it all yourself so you know what's going on if/when something breaks on the trail.  You can have someone else setup the 3rd, and still do the 3rd member swap yourself.  I've written a blog/tech article with step by step instructions for the DII including pictures of everything, torque wrench settings, etc.  I'm sure one of the PDX guys would come over and give you a hand too.  It'll take you about 3-6 hours, but the education will be well worth it when you are out on the trail.  I'm a tech newbie myself, and I assure you this is something you can do on your own.

Craig
