Last winter I saw a Jeep who had a novel way of carrying his snowchains.  Instead of keeping them all boxed up on the inside of the truck, he had mounted them onto his spare tire where they were quick and easy to get to... and they don't occupy interior space or get the interior wet/muddy when you take them off.

That's a good idea for storage after using them but I don't think I'd want them to get all icky (yes I said icky) before I use them.

If you spray them with silicone spray or cooking spray they won't pick up much mud or snow. Besides... how icky does a rear mounted spare get anyway? I don't plan to drive around all winter like that, but on a snowrun it would work well.

Maybe put a larger sized spare tire cover over them?

Good idea for keeping them handy. When I worked on the ranch, it was customary to have two spares and keep chains on them, as it used to be easier to just swap a tire than install chains, as often you needed to install them after getting stuck.
