My 04 Liberty failed emissions today and I need new cats. Parts store says I have to go to the dealer otherwise it will trip codes. Dealer gets 1800 dollars. Any suggestions? going thru a divorce and can't afford the dealer price.

I don't know what the laws are where you are at but you can order cats from Summit racing, JC Whitney, et al, and just have them installed by a muffler shop. The muffler shop probably sells them, too, but the absolute cheapest place will be online, as usual.

The codes can be reset with any OBD-II code reader and unless the Liberty cats are unusual, there should be no way the ECU will be able to tell the difference between a dealer installed cat and an otherwise appropriate replacement. This of course is just my $.02 which might not make it far across the country. Good luck.

I agree with Andy, but have you searched Liberty forums to see how they do it? I'm not that smart, but I can't see why aftermarket cats would "trip codes". Do you trust the "parts store" guy?

When the Jeep dealership replaced my XJ cat, they just hired it out to the local muffler shop.  If you know someone at your dealership, they might be able to give you some information on how they work with muffler shops.

I did check with a couple of Liberty sites and they agreed that there could be a risk of tripping the codes. Did talk to a shop and they said that they could do it and it shouldn't trip any codes.

I agree with Tom (and not just because he had agreed with me ;) ) about not understanding the mechanism behind certain cats setting off codes and others not. It is possible that the Liberty has some sort of super-efficient cat that emits less hydrocarbons and an associated sensor which can measure that output but I would bet that is highly improbable.

Every muffler shop has always been staffed by cool guys in my experience and I bet that you will be fine going to one of them to get cats installed. The only legit risk is if you don't bring your own cats. Then there is an outside chance they installed used or "like new" cats; this of course is a worst case scenario and I don't mean to malign all of the shops out there.

In my experience, the only reason you would run into tripped codes is if an O2 sensor gets damaged in the process of removing/replacing the cats.
Unless, like Andy stated, there are some sort of super-cats on the Liberty...
Good Luck!

Did the emissions test consist of a tailpipe sniff test or did they hook up an OBD-II reader?

If it's the latter you might just need to have the codes reset.

My '04 Volvo occasionally throws the odd O2 sensor signal low DTC for no apparent reason (but no check engine light), that would fail me here in WA. The state inspection stations all use readers.

It was the OBD II reader and they reset the code andthe light came on pretty quick.

Not sure of the number but it was for the left lower bank which is the catalytic converters. Trying to save money to get it fixed but my ot has been cut. I'm thankful at least I'm working but just broke my tensioner pulley and I only have one more payment which will be late.
