| I'm rethinking putting the lights on my rack because of the 'mess' of wiring that needs to go up there -- it is much easier to put on the bumper. Also, if you ever want to take the roof rack off, the lights pose one more issue in that way as well... The roof rack lights make for a good flood of light when you have them on, but I was often annoyed by the overflow of light down into the cab from the windshield -- even with shades welded on underneath each light. But, it's really a matter of preference. Roof racks on pick-ups always make me wonder... But if you did a bed rack that came over the cab as well, that makes sense. | | | |

| Mike, yeah, that's what I had too, but then you have the wires still there someplace -- unless you get real crafty with the installation... something I'm not really good at.
Did I post shots of the XD with the rack off? It looks very naked, no rack, no factory bars, no moonroofs. | | | |

| Ben, I am intimately familiar with an XD with no roofrack mounted. There is one sitting in my garage.  I still haven't figured out how I will be running lights on the XD. Like you said, it is really naked compared to a standard Disco with the rack removed and a wire connector just sitting there would look odd. | | | |

Michael Kronmal used a through hull weatherproof connector on his D1. It was a weather proof connector that was covered and flush mounted when the lights weren't connected. Something like that might work well.
I'm assuming the rack won't be coming off very often. Is there someplace you can hide the connector on the D1? On the D2, you might be able to hide it under the external A pillar trim. It would be kind of a pain to get to, but given the infrequency of use it might be worth it for aesthetics.

Works great and it has a cover that goes over the outlet when no plug is inserted. Super for roof rack lights as they are just plugged in to the outlet mounted on the roof. | | | |

| You could disguise a fair portion of the wiring loom behind a snorkel, Camel Trophy Style, at least that's how they did it on a few of the Discos. That is if you were going to run a snorkel, and you were obsessed with the Camel Trophy. You could even run a quick disconect up near the head of the snorkel.
I am currently in the process of doing the same thing on the TrooperSaurus-Rex. It saves me the hassle of tearing out head liners and cutting too many new holes. (if I lived in Cali or Arizona, I hack my roof like Swiss cheese but its a little different here in Washington)

| Matthew, I do have a snorkel but am not obsessed with Camel Trophy. I know that the wiring will either run next to the snorkel or in it, but I haven't worked out the details yet. | | | |
