Has anyone put 2 oddessey 1200 batteries in a Disco II?

Looking to set up a dual battery system in my Disco, I have 2 Oddessey 1200 batteries and am wondering if anyone has gotten them in the factory battery bay.  Or what else have you done?   I have qty 2 Hellroaring isolator/combiners at my disposal.  Any ideas?

For some relevant background, I've got an Odyssey dual battery set-up in my Nissan that works great.  I had room for a 1700 in the original location, and at the opposite, drivers side front corner, was able to squeeze in a 925 for my accessories.  I can report that the 925 will run my old ARB 45 quart fridge all night, and still show over 11 volts the next morning.  Your 1200's would probably be even a better combination.

As you know, I put dual Optimas in my DII by removing the bottle jack carrier and installing a dual battery tray. It was a really tight fit on all sides and on top.  I measured for the Sears Platinum 34M and it wouldn't fit with my battery tray. I can't remember if it was because of height, width, etc though. It was really close and it's possible that a different battery tray would allow you to snug them in there.

Here's the link to a dual battery tray. I had one fabbed up, but if I did it again I'd just go with this one. http://www.aedofab.com/guide_rover/dualbatterytray.htm

Grab the Odyssey and Optima battery dimensions from their website and see how they compare?

Good luck,
Craig

Well my Winch Solenoid is in the plastic housing for the batteries and jack. Not sure I want to mess with that as it is a very clean install. I'm hoping I can get two in the original spot.

How do you figure?  Are the batteries you are looking at smaller than the Optimas?  Those were the smallest group 34s I could find when I did mine.  I don't think it can be done w/o removing the bottle jack housing.  Hope I'm wrong though.

Larry put one big-ass 2100 in the factory tray but that doesn't give you the redundancy.

The 1200's are pretty small.  I would say about 3/4 size of a group 34, maybe even smaller.

1200 series = 7x8 inches   http://odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1200mjt.htm

Group 34 = 7x11

so if I have 1 inch extra in depth and 3-4 extra inches in length, I might be able to make it work.

Ah, OK. Those might squeeze in there then. That would be pretty slick Eliason.

Hey Todd,

I think Larry from Columbia Overland was able to do it in his rig! I could be wrong but I thought he was able to do it.

I put my second one in a custome box in the back with my ARB comp right above it. I then had Brent put in a Range Rover Sport 150amp altinater too.......

Runs my 7 offroad lights and whinch fine at te same time on night runs.

Larry's documented his setup with a thread in the Projects forum.  It looks like he removed the bottle jack holder though.

It must have been Scott Williams that did the big ass Odyssey rather than Larry.

I did the big Odyssey in the DII as well. Ran it all summer long with the ARB Fridge running. Never started the rig for 4 days on one trip and had  zero issue.....cranked right up when I needed it. Granted this option is expensive, but it works great and there is very limited wiring modifications.

If you recall I explored several battery issues before I went this route and in the end I defaulted to Scott's coaching and glad I did based upon the no fuss experience I have had.

I already have the dual odesseys so I will probably go that route. I also have a spiral cell I may throw in the back for the fridge and camp lights.

Todd,
Just an FYI that I'm probably about 4 weeks out for having my dual battery tray into production. It will fit two Odyssey 1500's into basically the stock location. The Odyssey batteries are pretty much physically the largest batteries in a given group for any manufacturer so this should also fit Optima's etc quite easily.

It does. It completely replaces the factory Battery box. I tried to make is small enough to fit the stock cover over it however it just wasn't meant to be. Problem is that the Odyssey batteries are just huge in comparison to the Optima's.

We'll have the production versions of this tray in stock within about two weeks if anyone is interested. Should have pricing in a few days as we're still working out the details and deciding what changes we need to make.

I managed to dig up a picture of my current setup:

Wait until you see the production version.  Much sexier!  We'll have our logo cutout like on the Toyota Dual Battery Tray.
