 Hello NWOS,

I am planning on driving to Banff in January with my wife for our make-up honeymoon.  I realize it would be much easier flying, but it wouldn't be easier in terms of transporting our gear and such, so flying it out of the question.

We are going to take the eastern route through Spoke and then north to Banff.

We are going to take Corey's LR3 with 265/65/18 Yokohama Geolander A/T-S with less that 1000 miles on them.  I also want to take chains...I've been looking at http://www.amazon.com/Security-Chain-Company-SZ447-Pickups/dp/B000HZA2ME

Any thoughts/recommendations out there? It seems RUD doesn't make their chains in my size!

I bought a set of the SCC chains for my Saab a few years ago. I wasn't very impressed with their construction. Instead of being chains, they are cables that are wrapped with metal coils. The traction wasn't all that good and the tensioner didn't work that well.

I also bought a set of Thule chains from Amazon for our Honda Pilot. I love those chains. They are solidly built and the tensioner works wonderfully. They just don't slip on the tires.

The 265/65/18s are about 31.5" x10.4". You might want to buy chains that fit 31" x 10.5" tires and see if they fit. There is a little fudge factor in the chains, so that size should work. For example, Thule recommends the same chains for 235/85/16s and 265/75/16s and the 265/75/16 are about an inch wider. If I were you, I'd just contact RUD or one of their retailers and see what they recommend.

Nik,

Rud makes a chain to fit that tire size. Go to http://winchline.com/tire-chains.html. Item number 0160. Third item up from the bottom of the page.

if you're buying chains and looking for a recommendation, the most important thing would be for you to clarify what you're expecting out of the chains. For instance if you're looking for chains as security against encountering conditions on rural roads that would make travel unsafe, cable chains are indicated for their reasonable ride, ease of install and trouble free operation. If you plan to do offroad snow/mud runs, then true chains would be best, though they are difficult to install correctly, ride so badly you won't want to use them on a roadway, and can require constant stops for adjustment if used for long distances.

Either way, I'd agree with Benny as Les Schwab will take them back at the end of Winter for 100% refund if they're not used. Cheap insurance.

Doug is spot on with his advice. One of the reasons many of us went with the Rud/Les Schwab diamond pattern chains is that they are as easy as cable chains to put on/off.

I have contacted Brinkman Systems and Viking offroad about the Rud 4X4 chains to see if they fit my 315/75/17 BFG A/T. Niether have e mailed back! Are the Schwab chains as good as Rud or close? I want the heavy duty type. Any other sources besides the ones I listed? Rud web site does not list my size, anyone running chains that fit a large 35ish size tire. The pysical size is 34" x 12.5". Thanks

Hey Mike......

The Rud 4x4 grip style with quickfit stop at 33" tires.......... they say you nhave to run a bigger size chain for 34" plus!!!!!

So cam locker and real chains is your best bet....... Les Schwab can get you HD chains .... There quickfit ones will not hold up to offroad use.......

Also the Brinkman guy sid he was travweling to Netherlands last week.... he may still be there......?

Maybe call Rud directly and find a dealer who will get you info on what you can use......
