Well, as it turns out, my employee Joe who is a former Volvo tech, has been to extensive training on ZF transmssions.  He used to overhaul the same tranny that resides in LR's!  I am sourcing some rebuild components, and will have him go through the trans in my RRC.  If all goes well, I will be offering rebuilding services in house and via shipping as well.  Keep your fingers crossed, but I am hopeful to be able to offer this service to the LR community soon.  Updates to follow!

kick, kick, kick......timing is everything. Speaking from past experience, it'll be great to have a local shop be able to rebuild them, especially if he can swap in the tougher ZF24 parts as some people like.

I found a source for complete rebuild kits, bearings, seals, and clutches. Hopefully we'll get started on it next week sometime.

I think I have my kit of seals, gaskets and thingies that I never used, if you end up messing something up and have to take the case apart (ehh hemm...)

Is that a jab? Or personal experience talking?

It's a jab at Dan's personal experience

OK, so it's a month later. But, the tranny is coming out Monday night! Rebuild will ensue on Tues, Wed, and hopefully reintall with the LT230 on Thursday/Friday. I'll update as we make progress.

The transmission is on the ground. The disassembly and hopefully reassembly occurs tomorrow. I am hopeful that the lift will arrive before Friday, but we'll wait and see. If it does, I'll make the trip in it for sure. Fingers crossed.

DAMN IT!! why didn't I take a picture!!
I saw it! It is real!!
ok, it's a really dirty transmission, but I did see it before it got operated on.

I also heard the song Craklin' Rose today but that's just a lame attempt to hijack this thread

Good news at the start.  With the pan off it appears to have burned clutch material in it only.  The fluid which I had changed less than 300 miles earlier had turned jet black.  Fortunately due to Land Rover's killer trans cooler setup, no damage to the torque converter, and hopefully not to the case either.   Here are a few pics.  One of the pan with the goodies in it, one of the parking pawl setup, and the last of the vlalve body before removal.  All I had with me today was my phone so pardon the pic quality.

Eureeka!  Forward clutch pack number one has welded itself to the drum!  Shines a little light on why it locked up when manually ahifted into 1st.   I have new heavy duty clutches in the master kit, and a new drum ordered for tomorrow.  The rest of the trans looks clean as a whistle, case in good shape.  Looks promising! Here's a few more shots.  Clutch/drum assemblies visible with valve body removed, front pump and first drum assembly removed, and a shot of the welded drum and clutches.

New drum is set to arrive this morning, with reassembly this afternoon. I'll post more pics as it goes back together.

You have about 24 hours before you have to be on the road. Do you think you'll make it?

Did the lift come in? It's like a Rover edition of Overhaulin' or something.

I am "hopeful" The 60" plasma may not be wired in yet, and I'm sure the snakeskin paint job won't have cured yet though.

I think you are thinking of "Pimp My Ride".  Chip Foose does Overhaulin' and his vehicles are clean, simple, and utterly amazing.
