| I think my day might have finallay arrived. Whilst driving in to work today, I noticed a very slight vibration/clicking noise when decelerating down the off-ramp. At first it sounded like a fan but while out at lunch running errands, the clicking grew louder and much more noticeable. I can't quite tell where it's coming from (front or rear) but I suspect the front drive shaft.... Symptoms : Very noticeable 'clicking' as soon as foot is off accelerator, speeds up with speed of truck. Noticeable at all speeds. Goes away when foot on accelerator pedal. I slid underneath the truck and did my best to see if I could get any play while the shaft was attached, but didn't get any movement. For those of you that have had any experience with a failed/failing drive/prop) shaft, do these symptoms point that direction? | | |

| Sounds like your front driveshaft. If it hasn't been repaired or replaced, do it soon. I did a replacement front shaft on one of my customer's DII's after it had already grenaded. It took out the fuel line and damaged the transmission. Could have been worse if he was going highway speeds.
I replaced it with a Tom Woods DC front shaft. Was actually stronger and cheaper than the genuine Rover shaft. Plus it is serviceable.

| Thanks Dan, that's what I was afraid of. I've been keeping an eye on it since I bought the truck, and keeping the one zerk lubed, but it seems that my borrowed time has run out. Not sure exactly what I'll end up doing, might be 'stuck' having it rebuilt since a TW or GBR shaft would be delayed a couple extra days. I'm not going to drive it home though....45 miles on the freeway would not be a good life decision. | | | |

| you truck didn't by chance receive some previous loving and have someone install the bits for the Center Diff Lock on the transfer case did it? If someone rebuilt the system previously so that you can lock it, even by hand with a wrench, you could remove the front driveshaft and get home with the center locked. I know that's generally not an option on the '02s.
I can also tell you that even if you get it rebuilt locally, almost no one carries the bits to rebuild the actual ball and socket in the center of the DC joint. I had the u-joints redone twice but the center of the DC was just getting worse and worse until I picked up a TW driveshaft. The few extra days might be worth it if you can afford it and can wait. | | | |

| Rob- I recently toasted a Tom Woods front drive shaft, after having it serviced (and yes I greased it regularly). I have replaced it with a Great Basin Rovers shaft that I would recommend to anyone. Having them side by side I noticed several differences, first that the GBR is beefier, and second that the sliding part of the shaft was actually sealed. The TW shaft is poorly sealed because the splines are exposed to dirt and the elements. A poor seal equals contamination and eventually failure, especially with a drive shaft that sits close to the catalytic converter (like the Discovery’s).
My recommendation is go with the GBR.

| Does the GBR bolt straight on these days. Back when I was looking, the nice thing was that you didn't need an adapter plate with the TW while GBR still used an adapter to mate up to the transfer case. Other than that, I've always had good experience with GBR. | | | |

| The adapter comes with the shaft, they come as a balanced unit. And it's green, because everyone will envy you | | | |

| Thanks for the suggestion Luke, I remember seeing you mention having a great experience with GBR when you were down there, once I get the diagnosis from the shop, I might be giving them a call to place an order. And RIck...no go on the CDL. I'm still rolling with the "neutered" '02 T-case.....I've got a line on an '04 case that I was potentially going to pick up Super Bowl Sunday.......no chance I would have had it installed by now, but still kind of ironic that this happened when it did. The GBR just may be the best bet at this point. | | | |

| Must be contagious. I had very similar sounds and noises last week. I had Columbia Rovers replace my front drive shaft with a serviceable shaft and all is better. | | | |

| If time is of the essence, consider buying a Tom Woods from Will Tillery. I had the early adapter style Tom Woods for 40k miles. When the ujoints finally got tired I bought the new adapterless style. Will has them made up for D1s and D2s and they are drop shipped from Tom Woods. The price was really good if I remember correctly.

| Just got the truck back, it is indeed the prop shaft. There is a local company that does rebuilds, and I've got the part #'s needed off a Land Rover forum, so I'll be doing some more research tonight to see if the parts are available locally, and then make a decision. Thank you all for the quick help and suggestions, I'll post up results, whichever option I end up taking. | | | |

| Just ordered a rebuilt prop shaft from Columbia Rovers! The little logo up there ^^ helped sway me. Fingers crossed it arrives by Friday afternoon. I made sure to name-drop you Dan, and mentioned NWOS. ---- Side Note : I'll need to return my core to get my deposit back....anyone planning a trip to or up from Columbia Rovers in the next few days/weeks that wouldn't mind lugging down my old prop shaft? Better yet, anyone coming up from Portland to the greater Puget Sound area from there today/tomorrow? Wishful thinking, I know. | | | |
