Hey PDX?  There are more Overlanders in Portland than there are in the Seattle area...Soo... how about you guys get together and do a few runs?  Someone other than Todd must be able to use google, maps, and a compass to figure out where to go. Anyone?

Wasn't Tillamook National Forest nominated for one of the BFG best trails?  I'd drive down from Seattle to check that out.

Craig

I've been asking, no takers. I think I posted 3 possible dates in the past few months with no response. Now I need to finish my project before I go out, but as soon as it is done, I'll post up another possible date.

The ODF has been finicky about Tillamook as of late. It is a cool area to explore though,,,

I'll see if I can plan a saturday. We will want some functional winches on the trip. What ever happened to Lindgren?

I would be very interested in doing dome trail riding in PDX assuming the trails can be done with an experienced driver. There is a group of people who are going to be doing a trail ride from Newberg Or to Beaver Or for a day rip via backroads forest roads and 4x4 only roads. I am also interested in exploring some of the old ghost towns and abandonded mines and railways in Oregon. I am including a link to some possible sites that I would like to explore.

The Bohemia Mining Distric is great for exploring mines, Ryan. Great area outside of Cottage Grove. Also, check out the areas near Sumpter, Granite, Greenhorn. Lot's of old mines in that region. Probably more than a day trip though.

The Newberg Beaver route probably follows the Trask area South of Tillamook. there should be some decent routes through there but a lot of it is gravel or old grade. I have wanted to explore that area more. We have done some searches in the area but I wasn't looking for trails. For some strange reason, people that get lost in the area don;t seem to be found - ever.

being lost out there is never a good thing. I am going to start looking into exploring that area more as well. I also believe the trail is going to follow the Nestucca river trail.

I'd be up for some day trips, or a weekend overnight.  My winch is functional, and so am I, mostly.

Where is Salemish? Is it near Siuslaw?

If it is a Saturday, I am probably a no-go. Sunday might work though...

It's a bit tough to tell, but based on looking at the route in my DeLorme Gazetteer, I think a lot of that route is paved, or at least groomed gravel. Just noting, in case you were expecting more unimproved roads.

Very glad you told me that I do want something a little more challenging. Any thoughts of a more taxing route?

Well, if you are going that far, there is always Tillamook St. Forrest ORV. That was my first actual outing in my first DI, I went down a 3-rut medium rated trail in a stock Disco with bald tires... It did fine, except for one time when I got back into the car after spotting the ruts and a corner on a steep down-hill, I shut the door, and the movement was enough to cause the vehicle to start sliding sideways on the mud. The rear quarter panel hit the rut wall and dented just under the bumper -- a good dent, but perfectly hidden by the bumper end cap!

I think Tony is correct.

From Hagg lake, you could run up Scoggins to Saddle Mtn to Cline or 7Cedars rds. Ultimately ending up on Hembre Ridge Rd or Archers Fire break headed towards Jordan Creek Rd or Saddle Mtn rd headed towards Tillamook. Might be worthwhile to call the ranger station to get open status though. Cool area.

Well looks like I should not be doing any trail rides until I get the head gaskets replaced, and the coil packs replaced, and plugs and wires. So it seems apparent that I most likely wont be on any adventures with you guys this winter but should out next year with a vengenge.

I'd be up for some exploring. The problem I have run into is that a lot of stuff is gated out that way! Also, there is mention of an old growth area somewhere in the middle of the Tillamook forest. This was an area preserved by the loggers that has trees that have never been logged. Been wanting to see this area for some time.

edit:  Here is some more info:  http://www.sheridansun.com/News/2000/0614/Front_Page/01.html

2nd edit:

Here's a rough google map:  http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=44.9292,-123.346424&daddr=44%C2%B0+56%E2%80%B2+10.92%E2%80%B3+N,+123%C2%B0+42%E2%80%B2+55.68%E2%80%B3+W&hl=en&geocode=%3BFa-srQIddUCg-A&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=13&sll=44.913642,-123.36359&sspn=0.087284,0.153809&ie=UTF8&ll=44.907198,-123.655243&spn=0.087294,0.153809&z=13

I think the main problem would be determining if any of it was gated.  I would absolutely love to explore this area if anyone were interested in the coming weeks.  Maybe we could even camp one night or something of that sorts.
