I had read some mentions of the Applegate trail on other threads, and I was not sure exactly what was being referenced. I did some investigations on  the various Applegate trails and found this one.  It begins near Ashland Oregon and runs to Imlay Nevada

http://www.emigranttrailswest.org/ascenes2.htm

I thought that it looked pretty cool and I wondered if anyone had done this trail before. If so, how was it? If not, who would be interested in doing it? Seems like Mid to late spring would be the best time to go...or maybe Fall?
Anyway, there was some info on other NorCal trails too, they also looked pretty cool.

I would definately be interested in something like that. I had hear of the trail running from the Applegate Valley (near Jacksonville) North into California but it was all heresay from Scott Brady and I may have misunderstood. It sounds like a great trip, I will look into your link!

My understanding was that it is a fairly technical, multi day, trail which would be a lot of fun!

Sign me up! Spring would be cool, but I think I heard somewhere that the Black Rock Desert can have crazy impassable mud in the spring in places, but I'm not sure about that.

Late spring at the earliest is what I've heard, though I guess it all depends on the rainfall.  Just something to keep in mind.  Also I guess snowfall will be a factor too, not just for what may be on the ground but for the water crossing(s).  It looks like there might be a couple if I'm not mistaken.  I think I may do a backwards pre-run of the last leg of this trail since it's right here, maybe this weekend.

I will join you on the pre-run if you go. And Yes, it sounds like late spring would be the earliest. I wouldn't mind a summer trip, I was just thinking that the colors might be a bit brighter in the spring.
I found quite a few articles on the trail, most of them were focused on the history, and not a whole lot about driving the trail, but there were a few that I found, here is a link to one of them. This is for page 4 of the article, which briefly summarizes the off-road experience.

apparently there is an outfit in Nevada, that guides multi-day trips on the trail........so I'm thinking it should be cool, if you can build a business around it.

The original link you posted is operated by "Trails West". They sell a $25 guide book for the trail. The link was on the last page of the Virtual Tour.

How many days would this trip be?

Well, I am still trying to calculate what kind of mileage there will be (trail-wise that is) I have heard that it's about 350 miles from Tubb Springs in Ashland, to Imlay Nv. but I want to make sure that we can access this whole journey from Tubb Springs. Otherwise, I believe the next nearest place to intercept the trail is in NE California/Oregon border. I obviously have a lot of fact checking to do still, but my brother and I may be able to go down to Tubb Springs this weekend and get a first hand look at the trail.
As far as how many days this trip would take, I can't say for certain at this point, but I would give it 3-5 for now.

For some reason I was thinking we were going to run it form the NV. side and into Oregon, or was the thought to run it from the Oregon side into Nevada?  Either way works for me, but I just thought it might be good for others to get it clarified.

As for Late spring in southern Oregon, again it all depends on the snow fall, which right now is not much but if it comes late we could be looking at late May.

Either way would be fine. I don't have a preference since it's new for me anyway. Anyone else have a preference?

And yeah our snow pack is pretty much nil, and if it does come late, and the snow pack is at an average level, this would push the trip dates back into early summer at least. The last time we had the winter weather come in late in the season, I tried to backpack to the 7 Lakes Basin, and was in 6 ft of snow 1hr into the hike and this was late June, and that's not very high in elevation.....and that would mean that the creek crossings would be dicey and we could run into the impassable mud lake that will be a passable dry lake in a month issue.
