My wife and I will be in Walla Walla with friends May 1-3

Anything simple to access we should see while there? No camping, nothing difficult, does not necessarily need to be off highway for that matter.

Thanks

I have only been to Walla Walla once, but it's very cool college town for the most part, and the epicenter for quality NorthWest wine. I was through for a night on my way to the Lord Flat Trip a few years ago and was disappointed I arrived too late to visit a vineyard, and left before they opened. Just East of Walla Walla is McNary Wildlife Refuge with camping. We were there late evening in July and it was a mosquito hell, as in don't crack a window, but this time of year should be much better. Guys were sitting in the river in chairs fishing at 11pm. Had hoped to camp a night, but the Super8 was bug and fisherman free. From there to Enterprise in the Wallowas (Lk. Wallowa is beautiful. Joseph, cool and touristy with a gondola over the lake) is only 1-2 hours, and I found a cool gravel route in that was fun and easy solo, but felt adventurous.

Mike- that's my favorite vinter. The second best night of my life was spent alone with a crackling fire, a bottle of L'Ecole No 41 WWV Syrah Reserve, and a wedge of hunstman cheese.

Maybe? The Jack in the Box by the freeway makes a mean supreme croissant, but on second thought...

Try the Apogee and / or the Perigee.  They are as good as it gets for WA wines.

I was going to recommend eating at 26 Brix, but I just read online that they are now out of business.  Bummer.

We went wine tasting there last fall. A visit to the Whoopemup Cafe in Waitsburg was a highlight, but make a reservation. Eat a big breakfast before you hit the wineries. I didn't and I was looped by the big Walla Walla pours after three of them. I enjoyed Forgeron and Yellow Hawk.

Thanks, all. Nate I trust your judgement, I'll go to Whoopemup
We're staying with some uppity wine friends. They'll take us around all the uppity wine things going on during uppity wine weekend.
Any input on getting away from said uppitidity?

You want something not so highfalutin?  There is a taco stand out by the airport.  They make some mean tacos.

It's not Napa, it's still eastern Washington, so it's pretty low key. Just ask for the Grey Poupon and have an uppity-good time!

In addition to Kevan's suggestions, any trails, geological oddities, super views, nice short hikes, etc ?

The Palouse is pretty and might be all green this time of year. Take a back road from Walla Walla to Waitsburg.

If you happen to get too uppity that weekend to get home, the balloon stampede is the following weekend. You can get real uppity if you catch a ride in a balloon.

I would Ask my Girl, but I know she would say "WTF way would anyone want to go visit Walla Walla!" I liked it very scenic but she grew up there I’ll try to be sneaky and get some info out of her.

My wife is from Walla Walla and I like going downtown on Main Street. Sounds like you may do that as there are tasting rooms on Main Street. Merchant's is a small restuarant if you are at tasting rooms on Main Street during lunch. My wife is also a Coug grad so we go to the new Cougar Winery on HWY 12, about 3 miles West of town. If it is a nice day, you can sit outside which offers a great view of the Blue Mts.

If you do go a week later, the balloon stampede is pretty cool and gets bigger every year. There is a night glow at the fair grounds too on Saturday night.

Forgot to tell you since 26 Brix is closed, another nice place to eat is Creek Town. It is on 2nd Ave next to the hosptial and Jacky's Flowers. This is slightly up scale. The average price might be about $30 and we have always been pleased when we have gone. If it is a nice day, you should call and make a reservation as it is really small and one of the very few nice places to go out and eat. They also have a few tables outside but don't know if that will be ready for use; however they have way better weather on the other side of the mt.

Do you go there on the Holidays?  Looking for someone to hang out with as sometimes I need a break from my wife's family.

Well, poor Walla Walla if all it's known for is sour grape juice.  I hope they have a good tavern!!!!!!!!!!

Drive some of the "hollows" east of town, drive down to Kooskooskie, skirt the Blue Mountains.

We had a great time, and Nate you were right about Whoopemup Hollow. Jerry I want to get into the Blue Mountains more.
Bummer of the trip- we went to one winery- Beresan - with our friends where some upitty wino backed his RV into the 4Runner, crunched the bumper and tail light. He then left a bogus phone number on the windshield and split.
We came out, all these other upitty wine people told us all about what they witnessed, how messed up it was the guy just split. Not a one got the license number.

And Mike, there was a taqueria trailer at Beresan. Pretty highfalutin
