| Hey folks, I am camping for 5 days in Maui next week and am hoping some folks have some tips. I know many of you are (or were) VW or Westfalia campers... any tips on what we should bring or otherwise? Any ideas on good spots to camp and explore in Maui? Thanks everyone! Todd | | |

| Tools and a manual! Just kidding. The Westfalias have an upper and lower bunk with mattresses so you can sleep 4 pretty well. I like the upper bunk a little better believe it or not. There is a cook stove and a small fridge. We always preferred cooking outside so you may like to bring a campstove. I would guess the Westys are stocked somewhat with some camping gear. Think of it as a big metal tent and take whatever you would on a tent trip. Sounds like a blast. Enjoy. the other Craig | | | |

| thanks Craig, that is a good idea. i may bring my jetboil for coffee and just get fuel there rather than bring the fuel cannister on the carry on.
it is stocked with cooking stuff, maps and basic gear. we rented chairs rather than buy them for $5 each.
www.alohacampers.com For anyone interested; The direct flight from Portland is only $300 right now. The Westfalia Camper vans are $115 a night, far less than hotels there and nearly the same as a rental car. so for roughly $1200 for 2 people, you can get 5 days in Maui including flight, lodging, and rental car. just add food and drink. :) | | | |

Food and drink should only run you another $1200. :) Yeah, If we go light on the food... :) We will probably go light (meaning I won't bring my 12V microwave) and eat at joints with a few nice dinners inerspersed, and make a few meals in the galley of the westfalia. But yeah, Ancilarries will be a big portion.

| Prepare yourself for life in the slow lane, but that should just be island life in general, I guess. Sounds like a great trip, I'm jealous. Have fun! | | | |

| Look for saimin joints. It is a Chinese / Japanese noodle soup that is a cheap food that the locals eat and is really inexpensive. Also, there is a restaurant near Lahaina called Aloha Mixed Plate and get the loco moco. Trust me. | | | |

| There is a Costco right there, I believe by the airport. We stayed in a friends condo and just bought food at Costco. It made for pretty cheap eats. That is good to know that the Westy's are that cheap. My wife flys for Alaska and she might be getting some of the Hawaii trips. Maybe I will have to stay over and do some campin'.

It is awesome.

| There's also usually mac salad with that loco moco, good stuff! You should try their mixed plate too and malasadas for breakfast! My wife and I are here on the Big Island right now and will be leaving in a few days....A few pounds heavier from all the food.
Have fun on Maui; I think there's a Zippy's there too! You should try their bento box there.
Cheers, Salue | | | |
