| My wife wakes up with the radio in the morning and I'm usually somewhere between being awake and asleep when she gets up. This morning I got up remembering a dream about a mysterious bottomless hole somewhere out in the Manastash ridge/Ellensburg area. So first thing I did was google it and sure enough Komo ran a story about it on the TV and radio. It's amazing what the brain holds onto. Anyway, sounds like a fun misadventure for this summer. http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Eastern-Washington-hole-shrouded-in-mystery-138913254.html | | |

| I'm in too. A trip with a purpose; We could even call it an "Expedition" then. ;) I guess we could even say it is a "holy expedition" even. Though I guess that would make it a quest. So, yes, I'm +1 for a "Holy Quest" to find Mel's hole. | | | |

| Where's there? There's a lot of research to be done before we set out on the Holy Quest. Did you find any info on where it might be? I dropped a couple of emails to my friends in Ellensburg (Both locals and Geographers). The first reply was that it was a complete made up hoax. I haven't heard back from the second person (A retired Professor of Geography). Even if it is all just myth, it's always fun to have info like this to spin a good yarn around the campfire. :) | | | |

| What I'm finding on the internet is that this may be a myth/hoax. Other than the same article posted on several different sites I haven't come up with much. I did find one site that mentioned "Mel's hole" is located 9 miles due west of Ellensburg. Alot of info saying that the guy Mel doesn't show up on any census info for that area. | | | |

| Yep. I watched the UW Video on it too. The idea that it's a Mt. Rainier blowhole was totally disregarded by the CWU Geology professor they interviewed. He's not registered to vote, there's never been a land owner registered with that name in the Assessor's Office database, etc. It wouldn't be hard to get the satellite or aerial photography imagery for the area. Google might not have the images, but when I worked for the Yakima Training Center we bought aerial photos from the WA State DNR. It's definitely not classified information. LOL. I think those same images are available online for free from the NRCS and other places.
It's also on private property, which doesn't make for a very exciting overland trip.

| A couple of the articals i read mentioned a truck stop just south of where it supposedly is and if it is real it would probly be in the vally below the ridgeline assuming from the discription that it could be an old well or maybe an entrance to an old cave system simular to the one up by Sullivan lake you simply see a large whole in the ground go down some man made stairs and its said to be miles deep and you can hike a few hundred yards into it. The possibility of an old lava tunnel is still there but it wouldnt be a strait shot down that area is full of old basalt fields and lava tunnels left before the last iceage my geology teacher is very interested now aswell were going to try and pull up some old falt line maps and see if we can find anything in the area that give a posible explanation to what or where. | | | |
