This is excellent, I can't wait to see the finished rear bumper for the RRC. Are you planning on making sliders or front bumpers?

We're talking about doing sliders and possibly front bumpers since ARB has for all practical purposes stopped making the RRC bumpers available with a few exceptions.

Sliders will probably come first as they are the easiest to build and draw up into CAD for mass production.

Somehow I missed this cool thread. I want one. Larry, I understand this replaces the stock tank straps. What is your guess on whether the RR application will fit a 94 LWB with the larger 23.4 gal. tank? I was so excited, then I remembered I'm a freak of RRdom. Tell me my butt isn't too big!

It should fit fine. The LWB tank is actually the same tank used on the D1. I have installed them onto other LWB's in the past just fine. It will not work on the early 1990 RRC's and earlier. Everything with a plastic tank will work.

In short, Your Butt's not too big!

I wish my wife would say that! Chicks dig these, right?

Last questions, then I call Brent on his cell at 1:56am to place an order. It looks really well designed. Does the plate fit/apply pressure consistently over the tank and keep stuff out? I'm just thinking about collecting loose pebbles and gravel on long trips? Any considerations there?

p.s. so as not to hijack this thread, your bumper looks most excellent as well. nice fabrication.

It basically replaces the existing strap.  There is little room for anything under it as it's supporting the weight of the tank.  I've had mine on my truck for about 1 1/2 years and have yet to have a problem.

We loved the Orange as well which is why we originally bought it from a possibly shady dealer.  Fortunately I knew what I was getting into and haven't regretted it yet.  The truck looks much more at home in Moab, UT than the very green PNW, but I think we'll manage.

I had also seriously considered transplanting a TD5 in mine a few years back.  In the end it wasn't worth it at all for all the money and hassle.  I figured it would run roughly $10K for me to do all the work, and require the truck to be down for several months.  Now with fuel prices the way they are it's out of the question.  I am however going to keep an eye out for a good 4.6 for it.  The 4.0 just isn't cutting it anymore.

I agree with you Larry, the 4.0 in my D1 feels a bit weak on the highway.  I don't feel like I am lacking power, but I sure feel like I could have more!

Ok, hijack done!

Larry,
Nice skid plates! Not necessarily a hijack but a slight deviation; on your DII rear bumper design:

1) Will it follow the stock bumper lines or do you plan to have the rear quarter panel "arms" higher than stock like the Greg Davis rear bumper so that there is some extra room under the quarter panels for rocks and trees? My rear quarters have both hit multiple rocks/stumps/gnomes and will never again match up to a stock bumper profile.

2) Any plans to incorporate a hefty, swing-away rear tire carrier? It would be nice to see a well designed and built one.

Right now the prototype follows the stock quarter panel trim, however I'm finding I hit it a lot more than I'd like.  After asking a few folks what they'd prefer and knowing what I'd prefer I plan to trim the quarter panel just a bit, just not as much as the Greg Davis bumper.  I don't have a gnome handy or I'd take some measurements.  If you can wrangle one up and drop it off at Columbia Rovers it would be much appreciated, be sure to put a bow on it's head.

Regarding the tire carrier, there is some thought about that as well with my initial design.  I have given a great deal of thought to a tire carrier for both the Rangie bumper and the DII bumper as I think they are both needed.  To date, I have yet to see a mass produced tire carrier for either truck that I think looks good and follows the lines of the truck.  In planning for the production version of both bumpers I'm hoping to allow to the eventual addition of a tire carrier, but that won't be for some time.
