| I wanted to get East of the Cascades this weekend but did not want to spend a day digging through a snowy road, so looked at the SE corner of Wenatchee NF and thought "Hmmm... wonder what's East of there..." I drove several routes on LT Murry and points south, basically because I have never been there and wanted to see what the terrain is like. Followed Umptanum Road west to Hansons Road to the observatory- the connecting Observatory road is closed. Completed Umptanum Road West/South to Wenas Road, then Sheep Company Road north to Old Durr Road North back to Umptanum Road. Did not see much game. Had a nice day none the less.
Roughly 45 miles off highway.

| I guess it'd just get shot up more if it also said "When you ignore the greendot regulations, please pick up all yer cheap beer cans and try not to pave the place in spent shotgun cartridges you ignorant filth" |

| Ah, a Ponderosa Pine forest. Trees AND great views at the same time! My kind of country. Thanks for the heads-up on that area. Will have to get over there soon. |

| Dale,
Many of our runs are in this or similar areas around Ellensburg.

| Craig- after this little glimpse I am looking forward to a Naches Redux. The landscape makes me homesick for northern NM |

| Craig, that is great news. I will try to get over and spend some time with you guys this summer on the east side of the Cascades. I have just been selected to be part of a team looking for a new minister for our church. That is an 18 month commitment with meetings on a weekiy basis. So I will be confined to quick, short trips for awhile. Ttrips to the Ellensburg, et al, areas would be doable. Dale |

| Grant: You were in my old college stomping grounds, in fact I rolled through there this past Saturday as well! We just ran Durr road, the same area pictured above. We saw bunch of people out shooting handguns, a Toyata Tacoma, about four Jeeps and some idiots in an Explorer pretending they were in a rally race or something...damn college kids!
We almost always squeeze in a trip up to the observatory when I visit Eburg, but we decided to mix it up and head for the radio towers, great views to be had Saturday from up there!
What time did you roll through? |

| John,
My wife and I went to CWU as undergrads and some postgrad coursework as well! In fact, as poor college students one of our cheap dates was to drive around Manastash, Lion Rock, etc for something to do. Especially in the fall. When were you there?

This was Sunday- In that little valley at 3:30, was at the radio towers intersection at 3:00. Spent a lot of time in the NW area near the observatory. Did you run that hill north or south? I think I would have had a tough time climbing it Sunday with the ice

Just to satisfy my curiousity, Craig, is there something about CWU gurls that makes you wanna get them in the woods for "something to do" particularly in the fall? Like a march hare thing?

| I enjoy spending time with my wife in the woods anytime of year, but since my wife's a redhead she looks particularly stunning with fall colors around.
No, I'm not going to say anything crude or explicit about my wife. She's way above that kind of talk.

| Craig, I hope you did not, and don't think you took that as any kind of a derogatory remark about your wife; I would never do so. I thought you were refering in generally to collegiate activities in the woods, and the fall reference sorta threw me. Wives are sacrosanct- I'd be half the man I am without mine, as would most good men I know. Manastash, etc seems like an area that my wife might attend a run to this fall- we really enjoy the areas north of NYC as the trees turned, made for an annual trek when we lived there. Your Fall Colors thread in the past gave me some ideas as well but the timing was bad |

| Looks like a pretty spot. I did a fall hike to a waterfall near there. If you miss NM then the Colockum/Quillomene might be even more to your liking. If you want the NM effect, just don't drive all the way down to the river, or reservoir I guess. |

Nope, didn't take it as a derogatory remark at all... Since you sort of "called me out" with your comment I just decided to make you squirm a little with my reply. LOL. You are a good friend to both myself and Julie at this point and I'd never assume you were insulting either one of us.

I've hiked to that waterfall too. One time a few friends and I caught a rattlesnake with his jaws wide open with a 1/2 eaten mouse stuffed in. He couldn't do a thing but shake his rattle at us. It's also a good trail to see both Camas and Death Camas. Both are plentiful on that trail.
I miss living in Kittitas County... well, mostly. C |

| Nate and Craig, thanks for the info, I am debating where to head next and noted the falls on the Umtanum road. Is this trail?. Still nervous about leaving the vehicle unattended in these areas to explore on foot. I need to find a really mean old dog to leave in the 4Runner to keep the filth at bay |
