So I just got a SPOT GPS messenger (the new style) and I am too retarded to figure out how to get it to track. On my "My Shared Locations" page there are indivdual tracking events every 10 minutes but when I put them on a map, they are just discrete points rather than linked things.

What am I doing wrong?

Sorry for starting a new SPOTty thread but search and the snow wasn't working for me.

I am not sure I totaly understand what you are looking for but the way SPOT operates in "track progress" mode is to drop a point every 10mins regardless of distance traveled, there is no way to adjust this. As for viewing/sharing these track points you can export the points individualy or as a whole to a GPX KML CSV file as needed. Also you can set up a "share page" if you provide this link someone they can see these points being dropped while operating in track mode. It is provided as an overlay on a google map, it also shows the time and locations of each point. This is differnt than the check in / OK function. When selected it will send a single point vie email / sms to the contact list you have selected with your location and time and a message that you have selected. The check in / OK point will also be saved in your gps locations on the SPOT website. As best I can tell the website only saves thease points for 30days but there may be a way to recall older points that I have not found yet.

If you mean a continuous track like a standard gps gives you the SPOT does not operate this way. You will still need another gps device to accurately build a higher resolution track file.

Hope this helps...

Yeah, I didn't make myself clear. I am aware of what you're saying Caleb about how it operates. The only thing that I have a question about is how to make the discrete points every 10 min make a line on the shared page. For example, I was testing it out this afternoon and the SPOT left 5 points. Each had the time, lat/long, etc, but none of them were connected to one another. Am I being retarded and conjuring up a feature that doesn't exist?

Thanks!

They don't connect. Qgis has a plugin if you want to convert a set of points to a line. Doesn't seem like the type of thing you'd be interested in messing with though.

mine connects?? With a pretty orange line. I don't recall having selected any function to make it do that. Seems like a default.

When I log in and select the "my gps locations" tab, the points I wish to view, and then click "show on map" I get :

When I select the "share" tab, click on "manage shared page" and then select my shared map I get:

I have created another share map and did not see any option that would turn this on or off (the orange line) so I assume its just a default feature.

ok, so here's my dumb question of the day. How did you post the screen shot? I tried to just capture a screen shot and convert to a .jpeg but wasn't able to convert to a picture that I can post.

alt-printscrn will copy it to the clipboard
Fire up MS Paint
Paste it in
Save it in your preferred format

Or install a screengrab utility. :)

I just hit print screen key, open ms paint and paste.  Then I crop the image and save as .jpg.  I use google to host my photos from there you get the link to share.

The only other thing that I can think that would maybe make a differance in the map would be maybe the features that you subcribed to w/ the SPOT service?  I dont know why that would make the orange line show or not show...

Also if you want a good easy free screen grab utility google zapgrab   I lied its not free anymore ....

Yep, print screen will grab the entire screen. alt-printscreen will grab the active window.

I'd prefer that you upload them here first.  If you don't, all your photos will be dead when you delete the photos from google.  If you go back to old trip reports and tech articles, all of the photos are gone making them useless.

Instructructions on how to upload photos here are in the FAQ (or you can just attach them).  For Trip Reports you can just upload the photos to the Trips and Activities Gallery, then link to them there (Click on the photo which will pull up the photo with EXIF data.  Right click and copy the image location).

If I ever find a way to limit external images I will, but until then this is only a preference on my part.  I understand that what you are doing is by far the easiest way to add inline images to a forum post.  I'm hoping the upgraded forums will make inline images a lot easier.

Thanks for the help. I found the same thing that Caleb did. Does anyone else find the SPOT online interface awkward? Maybe I'm just awkward...

Anyhow, I can't seem to view my shared page. It simply doesn't open in Firefox and in IE and Safari, I get this message: No displayable messages found for feed: 0m1HGqYXqH2VPDCq6tg5rSTUrFhDSTpQa

Any ideas?

yes it is very cumbersom. For a $140/ year you'd think they would have an award winning web site! I can't help to think that the service is meant for people traveling through some of the most remote areas of the world though it takes a major effort and internet connection to maintain your account. What's wrong with this picture.

Send an OK message with the SPOT, wait a few minutes and try again.

@Craig- Yeah, I've tried that. I've sent about a dozen of those since 12/27 (that's when I activated it) and tracked a 18 mi bike trip with no changes. I've deleted and make a new shared page, too. That doesn't seem to work, either.

@Curtis- I totally agree! I have had all the same thoughts running through my mind. How can a device meant to be used in the field be so cumbersome to setup and configure? I am definitely not a genius, technically (or literally) but I thought I could wrap my mind around this little thing. I guess not.

I just want the thing to track and update when I hit the three main buttons on the box. I can't imagine how I'm supposed to count on the "real" buttons...

So just a question: are people currently able to make and view and share their tracks within the past few days? I am wondering if maybe they are having problems with their web tubez or something.

@Curtis- I could see your info just fine. Thanks!

And here's my page: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0EK0qHlfohi6aZ1zBlS9rECbckcqmNjio

Lame! Any suggestions? I've sent SPOT some messages to which they have only replied to one. Interestingly, when I check the SPOT site under account info, it says I owe $2.992397E-15 which I assume means I owe $.0000000000000002992397. The recession has hit them hard, I guess.

I use tinyurl to shorten up their long urls. I'm at http://tinyurl.com/nwoverlander  I'm boring though.  I haven't taken my spot anywhere in a long time.  In fact, I just cancelled the tracking and GEOS insurance.  Still have the "OK", "HELP", and 911 which is all I really used anyway.  Nobody really cares to see where I'm at every 10 minutes.  My wife likes the OK messages each evening sent to her phone though.

All this talk makes me want to keep my sat phone and its text messaging and calling capabilities!  Ugghh!  I even have a SPOT (given to me by Cabela's) but have never activated it!  I don't know if I should even bother!
