My wife and I have decided (after sinking $6k in engine repairs in the past year) to keep our Discovery II and outfit it as our camping vehicle. It's finally running well, so are confident this is the most economical move for us.

Specific areas we are starting out with are:

  • OME Medium Duty Lift Kit - Springs, Shocks and possibly 1" spacers for when the vehicle is fully loaded.
  • Treadwright Warden A/T - 245-75-R16 - I am only choosing this diameter because it is available and not special order as the 235-85-R16's are and the 265-75-R16's would be an alternative.
  • Installing our Mombassa RTT on it
  • ARB Fridge.

This is all I really want to do to it. No winch, no messing with the electrics. Just a moderately modified D2.

I would like to hear from any D2 owners of their experiences installing this set up. I will be de-activating the rear EAS to accommodate the springs and such.

Pretty much what I'm running, minus the 1" spacers.  I'm curious about those though.  Is there any additional strain on steering/suspension geometry?  I've got the 265/75/16's AT and really like them.  I only get occasional rubbing on the stock front bumper at full tilt.

Hey Dan, I was wondering if the air compressor used for the EAS could be used as an alternative to an ARB compressor?

Dan, since you are not going to have a heavy front bumper and winch it makes sense to run med duty springs. Since you will install a rtt and will have other gear, have you considered using the 762 progressive rear springs? It is a really good all around spring for a truck that will go unloaded and loaded up

I haven't done any research on springs for the DII as of yet other than the OME kit available.

I suppose it could, just tha tyou would have to install some in-line power control to operate it. Although, I do not know what the capacity is. (CFM, etc)

I remember briefly talking to brent at CR about that.  I don't know that it's quite as robust as the ARB but seemed like a possibility if you actually have the compressor.  Mine never did.

I had the OME progressive springs on my DII before switching to the RTE 3" lift. Absolutely loved them. Soft and plus around town, but firm up when you put a load on them.

Jate rings or a receiver shackle?

The front recovery point is the tricky thing on those. I don't think there's anything, including Jate rings, that will bolt on.

There is a factory bolt on metal bar used for a tie down. With your skills, I bet you could fab something up to replace it that would make for a really solid front recovery point.

SOO glad you guys are doing this. With us both back in a rig we're looking forward to a few family camping trips this summer!

Yeah, I will have to do a couple mods to the front lower fairing, but should be a no brainer.

Looking forward to Eastern Oregon and the Q! :-)

What about the tire size. It's kind of an odd ball size, but its only a matter of and inch and a third on the diameter compared to the 235-85.

Andy would say it will make your truck look like a "rhino on roller skates" but I think it fits nice with the 2" OME lift...

what's the reason for going with the odd size?  Seems like the 265/75 is more common.  With the lift that size is fine.

I have the OME heavy Duty Lift (2in.) and it works well off road but on the road it is a bit bouncy/rough if not loaded down, I have 265-75-R16s on and they are just fine. There is a little bit of rubbing when the tire is compressed but nothing that will kill you or the rig.
