So I traded my 97 4Runner for two rigs, a built Yota and a tow thing. On the ride home the tow thing broke down twice! Luckily my friend really wants it and bought it off me when we finally got both rigs back. The plan is to swap a new body on the old chassis and then have some fun with it! SO here's some pics of the progress, we've hit some unexpected snags but hopefully things will get worked out before my annual camping trip to Naches.

I want to see more pics of that Toyota. Are you bobbing it or did it come shortened (but maybe unfinished)? Looks cool!

That's not the Toyota from the famed Top Gear episodes is it?

Well, worst case scenario it's sitting on about $5k worth of running gear so I part it out and get something else. But now my friend who was helping me with the swap is laid up with a bad back and can barely walk. Heres some more pics of the raisin!

It's going to get an Xtra cab and a fore/aft bob to fit everything on the regular cab shortbed frame. I was hoping to get a 3rd Gen xtra cab (89-95) but haven't been able to find one yet. Looks like now I'm going to go with an 87 Xtra cab that I found for cheap, I'll just have to make it somewhat nice!

It's definitely a pretty serious project, but it's a good way for me to get more in tune with the truck and learn wrenching/fab skills. I'll keep you guys updated when we start to hit it again.

It appears to have ARBs, Bilsteins, etc. What else is going on underneath? I really love the look of the early Toy pickups but that truck has seen some better days. Does look like it has a lot of potential for the future.

With the bodywork, will the final truck will be an Xtra cab with a short bed? Should be sweet either way.

I don't think it's quite 'sexually suggestive', maybe if there was a little more side boob!

Rule 3, not bullet 3 under Rule 3. Read ALL the bullet points under rule 3 and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

  • Any content that promotes mudding, driving off-trail, intentionally damaging nature, or any other content that violates Tread Lightly principles.
  • Sexually suggestive topics
  • Provocatively dressed persons

  • Vehicles doing resource damage
  • Sexually explicit content
  • Irrresponsible behavior (E.g. unsafe recovery techniques)
  • Drinking and driving
  • Political or religious statement
Seriously? In a rebuild thread? Where I'm resurrecting this truck from it's former life and turning it into a vehice capable of expeditions?

What about this truck? Brand discrimination?

I disagree with Craig's rule but to be fair, Tony's truck (the rolled Rangie) was not always that dented and was never presented as such. I did think you made it clear that the bodywork was going to be replaced.

Let's be entirely fair, neither was my truck! Below is what I hope to return it to, either sourcing a 1st Gen cab and cutting out the back and making it into a Trekker style truck with a soft top or if I can find a decent 3rd Gen Xtra cab going witth that and a double bobbed bed. This is the biggest project I have ever attempted and I thought that it could ad some worthwhile content to the forum.

Rus-

Your pic didn't turn out. I'm glad that you're doing a project like this. I agree that you didn't present your truck "as-is" and I don't think most people took it that way. I think Craig just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the expectations. Personally, I am tired of seeing fridges and awnings, so I'm looking forward to seeing your truck progress.

I can see where both Craig and Rus are coming from. I think a fair compromise would be deleting the pic of the truck posing on the tree stump in the front yard. I have seen first hand where a picture has been taken out of context and used a fodder for an anti-offroad group. The whole no damaged vehicle pic is a gray area, on one hand having a bunch of pics of trucks all beat up and mangled adds to the stereotype that we(offroaders) are all rednecks that don't care about damage to their trucks or the enviornment. The other hand is like Rus, taking a ole beat up ride and restoring it or say starting a thread on repairing some severe trail damage.

Well stated Benny and Andy, and Rus I see your point also, but we gotta have these images in context and I do believe Craig wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page.
I agree the stump pic in the front yard can be interpreted as pretty lowbrow, and would suggest you eliminate it.
I do look forward to your progress in this, Rus, and as a fellow Toyota nutjob I eagerly await your progress. Your 4Runner was a nice unit, so I figured your direction would be towards a clean, dialed-in result

Rus,

I understand that your intentions for this truck are to re-use the really nice running gear and to make it a respectable rig again. I look forward to reading about the build. The suggestion to remove the stump photo is a good compromise.

I don't want to endorse in any way shape or form the idea that a rig in that condition (regardless of brand) is a good way to *represent* the NW Overland Society or Overlanding/Offroading in general or on the trail. This industry suffers from all sorts of stereotypes and one of our goals from the beginning was to break them by looking respectable, acting responsibly, and Treading Lightly as a group.

I didn't explain my intentions very well, and by posting in your thread I wound up calling you out very publicly. I should have contacted you via PM and discussed it privately. Please accept my apology.

I'd prefer a whisky....

Craig, I can see how that photo could potentially be misconstrued. I removed the photo of the truck on the stump from the post and hopefully edited the other photo so there is a clear representation of what the truck looked like originally before it was rolled. No need for apologies!

Now, on to the tech! I still need a new body, anyone have one?
