Alert | Posted By Ben Bailey on 02/13/2009 10:05 PM Graeme, you can't just say something like: I have an '89 BJ74 and not post pictures! Holy cow, man, where do you think we live? Australia? Dave, try this on for size, this makes me drool: Holy WOW batman. Those Quad cabs are ALL custom jobbies, but man that one looks So nice. When I was living in Australia I got to tour ARB's lant and show room. Nearly all Hilux's adn 70/80/105 series's with a few Disco's but MAn what a neat tour. Talk about a bunch of people who really take their work seriously. The guy doing the "breakage test" of the locker carriers looked like a mad scientist he was laughing so hard and really TRYING to break the damn things. None of them let go when I was watching. Cheers

Alert | If any of you guys want to try out a G-wagen with a 617 let me know. I'll throw you the keys. Same goes with my Syncro Doka. I'm slightly biased towards the G since I have one. Most G's come with lockers front and rear. At Mogfest, most owners will let you try out their rigs if you show interest. Maybe we can do something similar. I'd like to try some other rigs that you guys drive. Has this ever been done? Eric | | 84 Mercedes 300GDT 89 Jagdwagen Syncro Doka

Alert | I'd love to try the G Eric. I've been considering that exact truck for a couple of years now and it would be really nice to see if reality lives up to the dream.
You're welcome to test drive my truck as well.

Alert | What about big american pickup like Dodge Ram 2500/3500 except newer modes with DPF/bluetech gizmos. Simple engine, available with 5/6 speed manual. Driveline can be built up. Look at Earthroamer. Payload won't be an issue. Wheelbase can be shortened close to 100" if you wish so as well. Not sure about SOUL part though.
Of course there is always this little very unappreciated yet you could say overbuilt Mitsubishi Montero(Pajero) thing. In Canada you can have imported one with simple 2.8TD withough electronic gizmos, manual transmission, good space inside. How many stock truck you know come with suspension driver's seat (aka big rigs) I have one. | | 1992 Montero overland eqpt 1997 Land Cruiser family mover (it's alive!)

Alert | Alex,
Ryan and I had a long conversation about the Montero's earlier in this thread.
A Dodge Ram, even if shortened, is way too big for a trail rig. I should have never put the word expedition in the title. I don't do much expedition travel. I drive on the freeway to 4x4 trails that wind through trees, camp with 3 people + dog, and then drive home. If I want to go on a longer trip, I'll get an Adventure Trailer. I like the flexibility of being to go big or small.

Alert | This is thread is way to long for my short attention span to read. My .02. Almost any vehicle if well maintained can be made a "reliable" expedition vehicle. Everyone's needs are different, expectations are different, etc. So to just make a blanket statement "The most reliable expedition vehicle is insert name here" is silly. My '91 RRC got me out of jams other vehicles would have been immobilised by without a doubt, but I am not going to argue that a '91 rrc is the most reliable expedition vehicle period. I think the diversity of people's opinions just goes to show that there a number of vehicles out there that can be great expedition vehicles.

Alert | So, the thread should be titled. "Hello. My name is Craig and I want a new truck. What should I buy?"

Alert | Nice LWB G, but you better drive a non turbo 300GD first.... they're slugs. Since it already has a 5 cyl diesel in it, it wouldn't be that hard to add a 300TD. | | 84 Mercedes 300GDT 89 Jagdwagen Syncro Doka

Alert | Honestly, I don't think I'd go for a 5 door with a diesel even with a turbo. I'm having some serious 3 door TD G-wagen lust lately. In fact, if the opportunity presented itself I'd probably trade my Land Rover as it sits (with all the mods) straight across for one.
