I have a question for those of you that have Thule racks.  What height towers (or better yet, model numbers) are you using?  The Thule site recommends the 953 "Super High" foot packs.  I saw that there is also an 8" model, the 387, which apparently isn't as super.  I'd like to get the lowest height that will clear the factory rails and it seems to my very untrained eye that the 11" tall towers are overkill.

Thanks!

Andy

I think that's right, I have the ones that are at least 11" (depending on where you measure from) and they allow the cross bar to just clear the factory roof rails on the '04 Disco II, and I think those are the same height as the '03 and lower year models. They don't look tall once they are on the Disco.

Bummer. I was hoping to save a couple bucks and 3". Thanks.

I tried the medium high ones with my RTT. The rear roof arches up in the middle and they touch.

The cleanest Thule install I've had was when I had bars on my front factory rails instead of the gutters.

The good thing about these is that they do clear the FRONT moon roof.

Craig-

Are you using the factory rails now or the Thule towers? I don't have the factory cross bars. I do have full length rails though. If I could use them and save some height that would help (I assume).

Edit:  I just found these Thule 450 Crossroad feet that clamp onto the factory rails and utilize the standard square bars.  They look like what I'm looking for.  I wonder if there is a weight restriction to these that might not apply to the standard 953 feet?  Hmm...

I'm using gutter mount feet for the RTT since they are stronger. If I put a basket on the front, I'll go back to the factory roofrail approach.

Yeah, there is a weight restriction on the factory roofrails.

Just as an FYI, Safety Devices, Baja Racks, etc all accept Thule or Yakima accessories, so in theory you can clamp a bike rack to a Safety devices rack and put a bike up there. Personally, I think a trailer hitch rack is a better option for a bike on a D2.

Yeah, but when you have an SD rack with a floor, the best thing in the world is being able to throw the bike up there -- so easy!

Andy...Craig is right, the hitch rack is a better choice for the D2. I have the hitch rack for my truck, also had the roof racks which were a royal pita. Lifting and trying to balance a bike and placing your fork into a fork clip was a interesting circus act. Where as the hitch rack is just throw on the bike and lock down and go.

I like my spare tire rack. I modified it to also carry my pontoon boat...I can access the cargo without unlocking the rack.

Going to sleep is the easy part...

I have a spare tire rack now, but it caused the rear door to sag.. so I'm switching to a receiver mounted option.

I hate receiver mounted racks, mainly because the ones worth getting are pricey. To be honest, the reality of slinging a bike onto the roof of my truck had never crossed my mind-imagine that. Argh.

Andy...you could check out Joe's Sports since they are going out of business, they may have a hitch rack at a good price. I could check the Renton one, am going there anyways today.

Thanks but I'm not in the market for one right now. I'd much rather spend the money for a rack on a tent, gas, or bike parts. I appreciate it, though.

Anybody ever use the Yakima load bars on a DII? Wondering about their height as well.
