Looking to put a inverter in my Liberty. Wondering what type to get and where would be a good place to get one?

What do you plan to use the inverter for?

Think mostly a fridge.

Most fridges run off of 12v dc, at least the ones that I know of. You don't plan on bringing the Kenmore, do you?

Not bringing the Kenmore. Very new to this and I see quite a few people have them. So wasn't sure if I needed one.

Well, you won't need one for an ARB or Engle.

I have no need for an inverter. Then again, I don't bring any camera chargers or laptops.

Bill,

Inverters are generally very inefficient. The vehicle is DC powered. Laptops, fridges, battery chargers, etc can all be run off of 12vdc as well.

Most laptops come with an AC-DC power supply. You'll want to pickup a DC->DC power supply as DC->DC is much more efficient than DC->AC->DC. These are commonly labelled Auto/Airplane power supplies.

Phone/camera/GPS/flashlight batteries are also DC. Just pickup an Energizer DC battery charger at REI. It will charge your batteries off of a cigarette lighter in 15 minutes, giving you an unlimited supply of juice for the gadgets.

Even coffee makers, coffee grinders, microwaves can be purchased from a boat/RV store that run off of 12vdc. *Most* of us start considering more manual methods at that point though.

ARB or Engel. There are cheaper and more expensive/better options, but it's a proven fridge and a good compromise of features and price. See the Vendor Classifieds section stickies. Columbia Rovers has a special deal for NW Overland Society members. If you want something cheaper, but probably not quite as nice, look at Benny's recent posts.

There's a thread on here that is fairly recent with a lot of discussion about the various fridges.

I have an Edgestar fridge. It works great, fairly inexpensive at 400-500 for the 43 quart model(60 cans of soda) While it doesn't have the clout the ARB and Engel fridges have, I does what I need it to do. I've been using it as a garage beer fridge for 3 months now non stop and it works great. The Edgestar fridge is  fairly new  to the travel fridge/offroad scene so it hasn't got the following the others have. There is no gadgets for them ie; Slide, thermal cover, tie down tray and what not.  here is about the most in depth write ups on the Edgestar fridges yet. www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php

I got mine from compact appliance through ebay for 439.00.

Oh yeah, no inverter needed. Plugs right into my cig lighter and will run for at least 3 days without starting the rig. The truck still fired up.

Craig is right about the efficiency of the inverters, but I use a cheap Schucks unit to charge the camera etc. when I am out, I just don't use it for extended periods when I am not running the vehicle anyway.

If we had asked the public what they wanted, they would have said "Faster Horses".
