I think my ac compressor is gone on my 04 Kj. Will I damage anything by driving it. Not sure when I will be able to replace it. I was quoted a price of over 500 dollars

don;t turn it on or it could seize and take your belts with it.

You should be fine. As a precaution don't use the a/c or defrost. If you want to be certain it won't run simply unplug the clutch at the compressor. Of course it would be helpful to know what type of failure it had.

Find out what the problem is exactly. If it is electrical you should be safe to drive, however if it is an internal mechanical problem you are on borrowed time. Not running the AC may or may not help depending on what the actual problem is.

Thank you, How do I unplug the clutch? I've owned the Liberty since brand new and have maybe used the ac a couple of times.

If the AC compressor you have has a cycling clutch there will be an electrical lead near the pulley. Follow it until you get to the connector, and unplug. Some newer vehicles have compressors that run 100% of the time in which case you won't have a connector.

If it does seize will it ruin the engine?

Hi Bill:

If the compressor is seized and the electric clutch engages then the belt will burn!

Is the compressor broken? Remove the belt and try and turn the compressor. If it turns it is not seized. I believe that your truck has an ac clutch relay so it could be that there is an electrical problem preventing the clutch from engaging.

Simple to test:
First start your motor with ac off. Look at the ac compressor; it should not be spinning. Switch on ac and look again; the compressor should be spinning. If the belt is squealing and the compressor is not turning, shut down and remove the clutch power wire and tie it somewhere safe. If its turning OK but no cold air it could be that your system has sprung a leak and needs to be fixed and recharged. If when you turn ac on the compressor does not spin then unplug the compressor connector, see if you are getting 12v to the connector. If not, it's got to be an electrical/control issue.

EBay has hundreds of AC compressors at significantly lower pricing. Find out what model you have, buy a replacement from anywhere but a dealer and find a local shop that will discharge your AC, install the new compressor and recharge.

Good luck!

Me again:
The problem may also be the conmpressor clutch itself. The clutch bearing may have failed. The clutch is a separate component and can be changed without changing the compressor.
