09/26/2009 11:56 AM Alert

We have an 06 LR3 that drives pretty much like any car we owned.

We also recently purchased an 02 Disco II.

The Disco has new front driveshaft, rebalanced rear driveshaft and new rotoflex disc.

What I do notice sometime is a clunk from the drive train when I coast in 4th (D) gear and then I get on the gas quickly. It clunks and then it rolls fine :-)

I had Scott with Columbia Rovers (Yakima) check the drivetrain when he did the rear driveshaft/rotoflex and he said there does not seem to be any other issues.

Is this clunk normal for the Disco?

Also, the clunk is reduced somewhat if I drive around in 3rd gear.

By the way, the passenger (front) window has a gear noise when rolling up, any suggestions on this?

Thanks

Bora, the transmission output shafts on LT230 equipped Rovers (all Discovery 1's, Discovery II's, Defenders, 87-88 RR Classics) are very prone to spline wear that can cause exactly what you are referring to. I can't stress how common, and for the most part innocuous, this is. The other common cause for your symptom is minor wear in the differential. In the case of Discovery II's it's most commonly the front diff. Again, very common, and if not absolutely hammering in and out, nothing to be concerned about at this point.

Hi Brent
Good to know. I guess I will watch out and see if it gets any worse.

Other than this noise and the noise from the passenger window, so far the car has been good.

Every time I hear a noise like this, I tell myself that I saved a lot of money by buying used

Thanks again

Hey Bora,

I have a 03 DII and it is normal from all the rigs I have ever known. Mine does it more at the higher speeds too. Nothing to worry about. Brent and Columbia do my work on my rigs and they said it could wait too. The way I see it is the shop makes more money to say it needs to be fixed. By saying it is fine validates there integrity...... Rare to find these days!!!!

Any ideas on where to look for the power window noise. Part of me says, it ain't broke so don't fix it. But I guess I am compulsive when it comes to cars :-)

I would say..... hey it works....... but if not swing by Columbia Rovers.... Motor noise or maybe a seal rubbing. Try cleaning the window. Make sure to use tint safe cleaner if you have tinted windows. If its the motor have them or someone do it if it bugs you too much.

I wish I could just swing by. I live in Tri-cities about 1.5 hrs from their Yakima location and 3.5 hrs from Portland :-)

Bora, the window noise is most commonly the regulator.  The window motors are fairly robust but the regulators wear out.  The plastic bushings break apart and cause rough operation.

X2.  I have had this issue twice already.  The plastic rollers (TERRIBLE IDEA) wear down and eventually break apart.  There is a person on Dweb that fixed it with parts from the hardware store and the rollers he found were a lot more robust than the crappy landrover plastic rollers.

Thanks

I will look into this. I also found this site that supplies metal replacement rollers:

Not sure if it is worth it though.
