Craig, if I were brand bashing, I would have said something negative about them. Did I? No
I was merely responding to what Dale wrote: "My first time back here in awhile too. Nice to see that people are realizing how dependable Toyotas are versus that European truck builder's stuff. I went through that divorce about a decade ago.
Dale's comments are much more bashing than mine. If you are going to call someone out, please be consistent. .Doing my best, but you're right, I should have said something to Dale as well. In the future if you notice someone violating the rules, please feel free to point the post out to me via private message or do it anonymously by pressing the Alert! button next to the post | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Alert | My Land Rover has been reliable in the 10 years that I've owned it. I've driven it on 2500 mile trips before and would do so again. It has always brought me back home.
Craig, I hope that you understand it wasn't my intention to murk up the waters on a Toyota thread with LR nonsense, but it never seems to fail that Land Rovers get cast in a negative light in comparison. I came into this thread hoping to learn a little about them, since I have very little experience with the Land Cruisers.

Alert | And I'm just trying to keep the thread from spiraling into a LR vs LC debate (which you are welcome to have in a separate thread).
This thread is an attempt to get the Land Cruiser a little more exposure and communicate that they are *very* welcome on the website. It is a legendary Overland vehicle with global popularity that is worth taking a closer look at. One that should certainly be more prominately represented on the website. I know you like to debate for the fun of it Mike. How about you try and make the argument in this thread that the Land Cruiser (pick any model you want) is the best choice for an Overland Vehicle and present your case. ;) You can put a disclaimer on it if you want.

Alert | Really? Hadnt ever noticed. If you want to learn about something you dont know about, then just read up on them. Dont post something that has no relevance to the topic at hand. Did you see anything about LC's in that story? I dont think so. I have had more problems with my Rover than any other vehicle (somewhere between 40-50 different rides) than anything else. So like I said, I want something MORE reliable. I didnt say they were bullet proof. Just my experiences.

Alert | Gentlemen,
No more LR vs LC comments in this thread. Any further posts on the subject in this thread will be deleted. If you'd like to debate it, start another thread. If you have specific make/model/spec info, cool LC photos, known LC issues, known weakspots/fixes for LCs, or any other info then please post the info up so we can all learn more about them. Alert | Posted By Benny Benson on 01/24/2010 8:06 PM I've always like the ole FJ55's. Just something about them says "coolness"
I drove one for two weeks in high school. IIRC they were big, no power steering, and don't have a clutch. That was a nightmare for me as a young driver. | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Alert | As far as problems, Craig already mentioned the headgasket on the 80 series. I think the rust problem spans all years leading up to the 80. There may be more but I'm mostly familiar with the 100 series.
Problems for the 100 series:
1998-1999 The front differential is weak and prone to breakage under heavy loads. Most people replace the diff with an arb. These years also don't vehicle stability control which forced Consumer Reports to give them a lower rating. They do have an e-locker for the rear similar to the 80 series.
2000-2001 A faulty piece in the transmission caused transmission failure which can be $4500 or so to fix. Not all LC's from these years experienced the failure and from what I have seen on the forum it looks like most failed by 80k miles.
A toyota service tech told me that rear door latch is prone to failure on the 2005-2007 models. In 2008 they redesigned the Land Cruiser to the current 200 series. For fun I did a LC build on the Toyota site and a new LC would cost around $80k. Ouch.

Alert | | I've noticed that LC prices, maybe even more than most SUV prices, are inversely related to gas prices. When gas was over $4 a gallon I looked at a factory locked FJ80 with a 130k miles and all the expo goodies for 6k. It took the guy awhile to sell it too. I also looked at a few tricked out Fj60s for 2k at about the same time. Cool trucks, maybe I will have one someday, but gas piggies nonetheless.

It was a manual, but required double clutching to synchronize the gears. | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. Glad I work from home. That diesel Craig linked to above is so sweet. Good mileage, good power, common motor means there are lots of parts around in NA to fix it. Wish I could do something like that in an SUV. Craig | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Alert | I own an 1984 FJ60 Land Cruiser that I love. It has been very dependable. It is currently gettting a heart transplant changing from the 2F to a turbo diesel toyota 12HT. While mine is in the shop, my dad is letting me drive his 1997 FZJ80 that has factory lockers. His 80 did very well going through all the mud and snow this last weekend while I was out chukar hunting in SE Oregon. My dad's 80 has also been very reliable. I think we are going to preemptively change the head gasket but we are not in any rush to do it yet. Here is my land cruiser in Death Valley. I've since then ordered sliders and a rear tire carrier with two jerry can holders. -

Here is Bob's 60 that has a toyota diesel 1HZ with a turbo, in Silver City, ID. -

Alert | I really want to buy a 40. I rented this one to go through the Rubicon with. It was a blast to drive and it handled surprisingly well on-road too. It had power steering added to it and an sm420 transmission. It was a lot of fun.

Alert | Here is a picture from a land crusier get together in Silver City, ID. My dad's black 80 is in the background. It's stock right now with factory lockers but we plan on putting a 4" lift on, 35" tires, rear tire carrier, ARB front bumper, winch, 4.88 diff gears, and a few other goodies.
