Scott,
I'm hoping you can finally shed some light on some info no one wants to actually admit to, either because they don't know it or because they think it's some grand trade secret they can exploit.
What's the actual difference between the diesel version of the ZF22 (or even 24) and the gas version?  I had someone on another forum paste a super small and impossible to read table showing different shift points and speeds, but that's about it.  Everyone made it sound like it was some black magic that I'd never understand so I'd be best off just shelling out thousands of dollars.  It felt as if the Earth would some how break its gravitational hold and be flung far from the sun into the abyss of other solar systems if they actually told me what you did differently from one to the other.
At one point I had plate numbers for both gas an diesel versions and I'll see if I can dig that up to help.  Obviously people know the difference as I had the work done, but I'd also kinda like to know WHAT got done and the person performing the work was only forthcoming to a point (in his defense, he was great wtih customer service and helping with a ton of other questions).
I don't like people claiming "black magic".
Until then, enjoy this picture of obsucity

Peter,

Since I have never seen, nor worked on a diesel ZF, I can't tell you for certain However I can find out easily enough. I think. My guess would be not a whole lot of difference. The torque a diesel puts out comes at a lower RPM, and peak power is lower, so I would think the shift points would be different as to not over rev the diesel and lose peak power. This change would be in the valve body and not in the transmission case. The valve body commands shifting through the routing of fluid. I'm sure you could alter the valve body to get a different shift feel. This is what a "shift kit" is doing, changing the travel path for the ATF, and altering the shift characteristics. As for internals in the case, most rebuild kits now (good ones) come with HD steel clutches which should take the torque without any trouble. The kit we just used had these in it. I hope my guess work sheds a little light on things. I can call our rebuild parts supplier and see what differences they show between the two on Monday.
