Alert | Todd, Mama bird is going to check her schedule today at work so Fain clan can have some better input on the dates. Theoretically, late July would be about perfect so we could drive Capri up to her grandparents in Issaquah for August like last year.

You may be the only one with a CB. Get your ham license, I will lend you a radio if you can't get your own...
x2 - get your HAM licenses this winter while the trails are closed. All reports indicate 6-10 hours of studying via hamtestonline.com is all that's necessary to pass with flying colors. | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Yeah, it's dirt cheap, the license lasts 10 years, and your smart enough Ben that it will probably only take you about 4-5 hours of studying. Once you use it on the trail (especially in a noisy series truck), you'll have the holy cow factor that will make you prioritize buying a $120 radio. Probably a $30 commitment to get your license. | | 93 LR Defender 110 05 Land Rover LR3

Alert | Ike, You definately need to make this trip!
All, I'm just trying to figure out what week I am going to schedule it and looking for input on what works for people interested. There are always late cancellations, especially for a week long trip, so some of you who cannot commit until may or so will possibly still find a spot.
Worst case, if some folks are left out because of scheduling, we can set up another group if someone will step up to lead. I can provide some of the info on the route for a great trip. | | 93 LR Defender 110 05 Land Rover LR3

Alert | Todd,
If there are other kids coming along, I'd like to bring Soren on this trip. I need to figure out when school gets out still. Finances, work, etc will all play a role in whether or not we can attend. Right now, I'm less than 50%.

Alert | OK, here is Kevans tracklog. http://northwestoverlandsociety.org/Library/tabid/238/Default.aspx Oops, I see Craig already linked to it. Yes Craig, It is kid friendly and I might bring Noah 10, Avery 7, or both. The route will change somewhat as this is my secod trip there and I know a little more now. we will run the route from Fields to Plush, and I am considering going a little farther east. Going in July will probably allow us to make it to the top of Steens. | | 93 LR Defender 110 05 Land Rover LR3

Alert | Sounds good Ben/Todd. Soren will be a few weeks away from 10 but he gets along well with younger kids so he, Noah, and Charlie should be able to get into all sorts of trouble together. Hopefully Kevan will come and bring his son too.

Alert | This trip is sounding really dudealicious already. A campfire scene from "Blazing Saddles" comes to mind.
Two years ago we made up to the top of Steens on the opening day which was July 3rd. The northern section of the loop is graded. The southern section was visibly stressing out the Subaru crowd. It's a great drive, as you pass through several different biomes on your way up. The view down the other side to Alvord Desert is really cool too.

Alert | | I'm in. Was planning on doing this trip in 2010 solo if a group didn't put it together! I will work around whatever dates end up coming about. There's a chance my drive my be a little shorter to Steens than most people here but that won't affect me going either way... | | Larry 2000 DII ColumbiaOverland.com

Alert | OK, technically, I'm cleared to go on the trip. I should be finished with my master's degree before then.
The thing that may be holding me back is that we need a new car (no, the Series doesn't count). The BMW has had terrible bad luck this last year, and it's really hanging on by a thread. Basically, we are saving up for a new family/wife vehicle and literally praying that the BMW holds on long enough so that we don't have to go into debt to be able to drive to work.
BUT! I am cleared to go!! I do want to buy a radio though, so I'll need suggestions on a sub-$200 hand-held. One with the right frequency range, that plugs into vehicle power, and it would be nice to be able to attach an external antenna to it. You might consider going to QRZ.com to shop the classifieds for a good deal. You need a callsign to sign up though, so get studying. :)

Alert | I've just looked around on ebay and there are good deals out there on older (a few years) stuff with battery packs and extras. Not 100% sure of what parameters I'm looking for as far as watts, band, dual-band: http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/ht/th75a.html
Maybe you should transport this over to the communications thread.
By the way, does anyone know of an online source for listening to ham transmissions? | | RBBailey Images Rovers

Alert | | As Craig mentioned, take your Ham test and all your questions will be answered. It will literally only take a few hours of studying. Ham Radio Outlet has the study guide you wanted that. They probably even have them at B&N, Borders or your local book reseller. | | Larry 2000 DII ColumbiaOverland.com
