Hey gang, was wondering if anybody had a good secret spot out in the Gorge?  We are looking to trial run the new lift & built in's this weekend before the big journey so want to stay close enough to home but feel far enough away at the same time!

Our only criterium is no city light haze!  Anywhere within an hour or two from hood river would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah Ben? Does that get you out and far enough away? Sounds like a good maiden voyage run! Does it get very techy (driving wise) or is it a pretty mellow utility road? That might be in the sights for this evening!

It can be technical, but only barely, only if you want it to be. Plenty of options out in that area. And you are never far from help if you need it.

If you continue north from there you can get way up to get some views... but the clouds won't give you that. I've been up their in August with flowers just blooming and the temps as low as 50 degrees with thick clouds.

Start by going here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=skamania+washington&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Skamania,+Washington&gl=us&ei=Cg34S9OkBJueM8rU6L8F&ved=0CBYQ8gEwAA&ll=45.695859,-121.909908&spn=0.000957,0.002411&t=h&z=19

Go west on the powerlines.

Try the surveryor's ridge area south of Hood river. I was up there the last few weekends and it's a great fairly short but very scenic trail. You can start at the Oak ridge trailhead just south of the Ranger district office (about 10-15 mi. South of Hood River). You go up the ridge on a typical loose steep powerlines trail. Take a left at the top (head North) and continue on up the ridge. Spectacular views with some nice twisty forest driving. There is some overgrown scratchy brush towards the North end of the trail. After a while the trail turns into a dirtbike area, so you have to go back the way you came or exit east to FR 17 (Pine mont Drive). A great easy-access moderate trail. If you're into Mountain biking, the southern direction from the powerlines is one of the best-known trails around for good reason.

Try and find "Three corner rock" the trail to it from the south side is a bit tricky. The view is worth the drive, it's about an hour in.
