Alert | Greetings, Matthew Mangus here. I'm usually roaming around Portland in a '73 FJ40. Anyhoo, I've been posting the ad below around the innernets to folks who I believe would appreciate both the gear and the event. I'm really hoping I can find someone w/ a cool rig that I can pair up alongside my 40. If you haven't been down to Oakridge yet, you should really check it out. Cheers, .matthew ---- Win a Free Ticket to July Mountain Bike Oregon from Kuat Racks
Mountain Bike Oregon promises to better than ever this year. Randy has been working tirelessly to promote the event around the region, and his efforts are paying off. Currently, there are four different breweries bringing free beer and ten different bike manufacturers bringing demo bikes.
I will be promoting Kuat Racks and have arranged to have two vehicles in the vendor area to display my wares. One of them just had to back out - 4wd wheelers & their misguided priorities - so I'm creating a contest to find a new display vehicle and give someone a free ticket to the July event. It can be just about anything as long as it:
1. looks kick ass
2. has a 1-1/4" or 2" hitch receiver and
3. can remain parked for the entire weekend.
Post a photo of your vehicle to the Kuat Racks Facebook page by midnight Wed, July 1st and it will be voted on by Kuat's fans. You can vote for yourself, but only once.
I know it's short notice, but I'm doing this on the fly and would like to be able to have someone selected and notified by Fri July 4th so that they can have two weeks to figure out which bike to bring/ get off work/ wrangle a yard pass from the old lady/old man.
More details on MBO here: www.mtbikeoregon.com
Note: You will NOT have to man the Kuat vendor tent; you WILL have to ride your tail off and have a great time.
Cheers,
.matthew | | | |

Alert | Kuat has sweetened the deal on this contest by announcing that the owner of the chosen vehicle will also get to keep the rack that is displayed on their vehicle.
Currently a WRX is in the lead. Where's the love from the Overland crowd? I think a nice Rover would look good next to my 40. ...don't worry, I'll pull you back onto the pavement. ;)

Alert | Sweet single track in the mtbikeoregon video. Thanks for posting. http://www.mtbikeoregon.com/images/movie.html please list the riding locations that are shown in the video. Thanks a ton. Looks a lot like Washington (suprise). Good luck at the show.

Alert | Todd / Tom, The two MBO events this year are July 17-19 & August 21-23 . I currently have Mark Hawley's monster Metal Tech FJ Cruiser signed up for August. Even if you don't win a free ticket, I highly reccommend Mountain Bike Oregon. It's a great festival. All of your food and drink is completely taken care of. This year there are four breweries bringing beer and ten bike companies bringing demo bikes. ...and of course, there's the killer riding. Tom - I'm not exactly sure where the video was taken, but my guess is either Alpine or Hardesty trails. There is so much good trail down there that I haven't hit it all in the 6-7 trips I've made down there over the last couple of years. The Alpine trail is a 6000 descent over 15 miles. More info and a good vid here: http://btrails.com/trails/alpine-trail-oakridge-oregon Yes, it does look a lot like WA trails. I've been thinking about getting myself up to Enumclaw, WA to try Skookum Flats. It's a highly rated IMBA Epic. http://btrails.com/trails/skookum-flat-trail-enumclaw-washington Hey, are there enough overland oportunities along the central cascades that would accomodate a combo overland/mtb group trip? ...and are there enough mtb riders in the NOS? I'd really get into something like this and would be happy to help out planning the mtb portions. cheers, .matthew

Alert | Thanks for the offer, but after working for so many years in the outdoor industry I think I'm a little burned out on the big production dog and pony shows. I prefer the smaller get togethers these days. I have been thinking the same about combo trips. Its been easy to combine white water paddling and mountain bikes (where there's mountians there tends to be white water rivers!) but I haven't researchd enough overlnad routes to know about adding that but I'm sure its plentiful. I want to go to Whistler and ride/paddle/drive. Moab is on our list.

Alert | I would be interested in a NWOS ride somewhere. If anyone finds themselves in the Hood River OR area looking for a ride you should look me up. We are just across the river in White Salmon WA and we have hours of magical single track out our back door. I would love to put the Double Cab in the running for this and have been dying to ride Oakridge for sometime now. We are booked for a trip to Sun Valley that weekend for some riding and family visits. the other Craig

Alert | Tom, If you head to Moab, you have to ride Fruita, CO as well.
Craig S, I dig the double cab! I frequently ride Hospital Hill and Syncline in White Salmon / Bingen. ...well at least until it gets hot and the poison oak gets out of hand. Keep and eye on my ride calendar - http://www.facebook.com/pages/pdx-mtb/95651112224?ref=ts - and post up a ride or three.
THere's got to be some good overland driving in the Central Cascades between Hood and Bachelor, isn't there? I could lead a MTB ride that starts at Timberline and drops down the mtn to Welches. It's a blast!

Alert | I like the idea of droppin' down. I'm much more of a downhiller these days. Climbs are killing me the last few years. I'll definitely bring up the rear on any climbs. (heck I should probably bring an FMRS radio!) Selecting a bike out of the quiver, sounds like a good trail for my Kona Dawg Primo (5" front & rear)? No sense bringin the hardtail 29er if I'm not climbing a lot, and probably more swoopy rather than big hucks, so no need for the Stinky Deluxe (8" front & rear). Yes, this is something that we have to look into. Just checked out your MyFace ride page and the Duncan BC cable cam video. I'd be following the dog around some of those sneak routes!

Alert | I'd bring both the Dawg and the Stinky if I were you. The Stinky would rock on the Glade trail and you'd want the Dawg for neaby Knebal Springs, Surveyors Ridge, etc.
Tom, how far N in WA are you? It might be too much of a haul, but if you own a Stinky, you should check out the Black Rock Demo Day this Sunday - http://www.brmba.org/
Are there enough riders on this forum to create a 'cycling' page - like MUD does? http://forum.ih8mud.com/bicycling/

Alert | Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm ALL THE WAY north, in Bellingham.(20 minutes from the Candian border). I can see the Canadian Coastal Mountain Range and the mountains of Vancouver Island from my house. (took this from my roof top last night, thanks for the segway )

The problem with living in Bellingham is that our main vein to many places of course is I-5 which gets bottled up pretty badly sometimes. We've travelled the last two weekends and are probably lying low this holiday weekend as there is always great paddling and riding right here. We may go to Mt Baker for an overnighter. Thanks for the offer and have a great time.

Alert | Matt,
I'm not sure if there are enough people to warrant a separate forum for Mtn Biking, but I have been considering adding one for "Adventure Sports" where people can talk about biking, kayaking, backpacking, snowshoeing, etc. While we all enjoys 4x4 trails, most of us built them to get us to locations where we do other things.
I meant to reply earlier, but there are a lot of places where Overanding and Mountain Biking could be coupled. Every single 4x4 trail also makes a good MTB trail. Back in college, a lot of the trails we ran around Ellensburg, WA on our MTBs were the 4x4 trails we are running now. They are a very natural combination.

Alert | I totally agree w/ the adventure sports forum idea. Our focus changes seasonally anyway.
In addition to attending mtb events as a rep, I am putting on multiple overnight ride/camping events this summer - I mentioned a link to my ride calendar above. A couple of them could be coupled w/ an overland experience if there's someone you know of on this board that really knows overlanding int he central cascades. Alternatively, I could tap into the Evergreen club for info on Central and Northern WA trails if needed. This would probably be more fun for me bc it would mean new trails as well as a new overland experience, but I'm game for anything.
Feel free to split up this thread as needed. It's moved beyond finding a vehicle for MBO. ...although the contest was fun - and I got at least one serious Unimog offer - and will be repeated for the August event. You guys should think about it. It would be good exposure for the club - or an associated biz like Columbia Rovers - to have a cool vehicle w/ a big NWOS vinyl across the hood. I'd be more than happy to share my vendor space if you guys have club literature.
