Anna and i just bought ourselves a new tent (rei taj 3)we're aching to try out. We won't be able to leave seattle until around 3 so anna has requested a place semi close (within an hour) anybody have any reccomendations? I'd like to escape the elbow to elbow feeling of the city and have a spacious site, kinda like the Naches campsite i occupied a few weeks ago.

I've camped up on Tinkham Rd before. Just head up the dirt road, keep an eye out on your left for something that looks like a good spot and pull over.

The other place we frequent is Salmon La Sac, just past Roslyn. Go through the town, and drive to the end of the road, head up the dirt road, and there's a bunch of spots.

Disregard aye, i want to go up past roslyn, to the lake off the fortune creek trail but that has been deemed too far. I think tinkham would be a good deal, nice and close, out of seattle, etc. Thanks craig and roger.

I think Gallagher Head Lake is still snowed in anyway. If it isn't, it is the heart of bug season. I'm going to head up that way in August or September after the bugs have cleared.

hmmm, right after i put the new tires on, just for a day trip, we drove up the fortune creek trail, i didn't make it all the way to gallager head but the scenery was awesome, we went in september and in october, no snow in sep but snow in october, just stayed on the service road in oct, had fresh tracks for the last part of the road.

Another great area is the Beckler River Rd. off highway 2 at Skykomish. FS RD 6530 off of the Beckler River Rd has some cool primitive camping spots right by Rapid River. The whole area is fun to explore.

Yeah, Beckler River is a really good suggestion.

If it is full, Foss River Rd. just up from there. Near the top are some fantastic campsites with views out over Wilderness. I'm not sure if they've fixed/reopend the road going up or not yet though. If not, there is an old road just past the railroad bridge on your left that has eroded to a 4WD trail. It would be fun to see if we could get to the top going up the back way. We'd have some serious solitude until the road gets fixed.

Julie, Soren, and I are headed out this Saturday for 1 night of camping too. We want to try out the new rooftop tent that Todd fixed me up with.

Within an hour is tough. I can second the Bechler River Rd near Skykomish, but it's a little longer than an hour drive. There are some fun roads off I-90 at Exit 38 that I know well. I've seen some weird dudes up there though and haven't camped. I usually use it for daytime puttering close to home. Another option, and I say this with a bit of reservation since it is a campground, and I try to avoid them at all cost, is the new USFS Middle Fork Campground. I took the kids there after a day exploring off Exit 38 and it's nice and lonesome for the most part. Easy hiking trail along the river, level tent sites, nice bathrooms, and if the weather is bad you can be home in 45 minutes. Just a thought. Close to home is tough.

Went there with the family last weekend.  It was b-u-s-y.  Beautiful as always though.  I think you need reservations to camp.

My wife and I were thinking about getting out of the city this weekend and do some winter camping.  I was thinking about Beckler River as mentioned below, but the forest service says the camp grounds are closed this time of year.  Any reccomendations?
