I know this isn't technically about camping, but my wife and I are looking for a winter activity.  We are considering cross country skiing or snow shoeing.  I'm looking for equipment advice from anyone who does either one, or both of these activities.  Thanks in advance

Both are fun but suck if you're set up for the wrong one. Tubbs or the MSR brand are good for snowshoes. I'm sure there's other brands equally as good. Get used to the groomed trails if you're x-c skiiing to maximize the fun ebfore you head out to less groomed and more work kinda trails.

I have Atlas snowshoes (purchased 15 years ago), but I've heard a lot of people lately raving about those plastic looking MSR snowshoes. While they don't look at cool, they are nice and light.

The Mountaineers sells a great book on Snowshoeing written by Gene Prater of Ellensburg, WA. He passed away a few years ago, but he invented the "Western Snowshoe" which is what everyone sells now. His son still makes them by hand out of wood and tendons.

Yes, Gene Prater was my great great uncle, he and bill made sherpa snow shoes - the type you are describing - I still visit with Bill Prater in Cle Elum...The book is also available at area REI's.
