I was considering a 'Mr. Heater' as seen in Cabelas catalogue. Has anyone done any research or used one of these propane heaters for winter camping? There is a setting for 4000 or 9000 BTU on this one but a smaller one called 'Little Buddy Heater' is rated at 3800 BTU which would be adequate for inside the back of the pinz.

I have the bigger one. They work well as long as there is no wind. With even a little bit of wind they blow out. They work great to warm up or defrost the RTTs. The tipover shutoff works well. I haven't tested the Carbon Monoxide safety feature yet.

I bought one of these:

It keeps my 8x8x6ft  tent warm in 40-50 degs. for about 5 hours.

I have one of the little buddy heaters. It works great for heating my small tent. It will run for about 6-7 hours on low on a new 1lb bottle. It'll keep the tent warm enough to sleep on top of your bag...almost to warm. I use it to get take the edge off in the mornings when getting up. I am planning on buying the hose adapter for it so I can get one of those 5lb refillable bottles. All in all it's a good investment and it has extended my wife's camping season a little...

Thanks to all for your help in making the decision. I went to the Gander Mountain store this morning and purchased the 'Little Buddy' heater on sale. I'll give it a try tomorrow morning when it is a bit more brisk.

Benny...the adapter sounds like a good idea, that's next on the list.  The Rocky Mountain Pinz group is planning a 'ColdButt' campout in Feb and I am trying to get things a bit at a time and try them out at home.    I got that from Craig's post on camping clothes, etc.

I have the adapter for mine, hooked up to a 10lb propane tank. A 5lb bottle sounds like a good size though.

I didn't realize it at first and wasted a bunch of time, but the tank end (not the Mr. Heater Buddy end) has reverse threads.

Awhile ago I acquired used catalytic heater by Coleman. It's all good and dandy but it developed one nasty habit pictured here:

Since then I don't feel like having any sort of equipment like this inside combustible structure

 Alex,

There is no guarantee that a new one is going to be any better than a used one, you are right on that. Very scary video and although standing in front of it is not the best it seemed to be the only way to light it.  It has crossed my mind that this might be problematic in the wrong circumstances.

Thanks for the warning.

The Mr. Heater has a piezo ignition switch. There is another brand that runs outside the tent, and has a heat duct that you run inside the tent. This is probably the safest way to operate one of these and insure that you don't get carbon monoxide poisoning.
