I started this because I didn't want to jack Craig's Costco flashlight thread.

Speaking of LE grade lights.  They still haven't made an affordable < $200 led flashlight to replace my 5 D maglite with xenon bulb however packing it around outside the vehicle is the suck.

I used to be kind of a flashlight snob in that I thought the only good flashlight was a virtually indestructible one but I eventually learned that it's better to just have light when and where you need it than to not have it because you can't afford extras.  I have a pretty nice N cell led flashlight for my pocket and I remember this one time when we were going fishing my partner didn't have anything so he stopped and bought this cheap set of 5 flashlights and I kind of scoffed at him about it.  Later I realized there was a method to his cheapness.  He put them in ziplock bags, tossed one in the ice chest, hey we can now see what we are getting!  Tossed one in the live well...no more fishing around with your rod in one hand, flashlight in your mouth and accidentally grabbing a crab.  Environmentalists please stop reading now...he even dropped one over the back of the boat so we could see what was crossing the chum line and he still had 2 flashlights left that he wasn't worried about getting all covered with bait & chum...unlike my expensive, brighter light that I wasn't too thrilled about getting all funky.  Luckily he let me borrow the last one.

From then on...no more mr flashlight snob.

Traded in all my project vehicles for my 2009 Xterra, not an ounce of buyers remorse.

I too like to have a good quality rugged flashlight. I have a nice "Duracell" Led flashlight That I love and it was only like 25 bucks. I also have a tendancy of loosing my 3 cell maglights...don't ask me how I loose something that big, but they get left places or stolen. I do like to have a few cheapoes around as backups, or when I don't want my "good" light all messed up and as you said "funky". It is always good to have extra lights when you are out in the stix and Maglights and the like can be a bit expensive as "extras" In other words....I'm with ya!!!! (sorry for rambling)

Two of my Maglites are sitting at the bottom of storm sewer drains around town after rolling out of my truck and being magnetically sucked into the grates. Luckily they are prevalent at gift exchanges every Christmas and an easy steal.

I've had a responder 3 C-cell light for about 8 years now. Cost me 40 dollars from Gall's. Built in belt clip, something like 35000 candle power. Rubber case. Dropped it 4 stories when the belt clip fell apart one day after about 6 months of using it. Put the pieces back together, still works. Have never even had to change the bulb.

I just picked up a 120 lumen Cree brand LED flashlight from woot.com the other day, takes 2 D cells, it's super bright, looks similar to a Mag light with similar build quality. Pair this with my Remington branded 120 lumen headlamp and you have plenty of light for anything you might need.

I have to agree with Jay about the cheap flashlights, sometimes cheap gear is good!
