Alert | Congrats, look forward to seeing how you build yours out. Not looking for one right now but certainly seems to beat spending the same amount for one of those harbor freight or home depot trailer kits.

Alert | Posted By Jay Erickson on 04/02/2010 1:45 AM What are some of the gotcha's to look for when looking these trailers over? I checked for rust inside and out and any major damage. I made sure that both hand brakes worked and that it had good lights and tires. That’s about all from a visual walk around. Also they usually have side rails a canopy and bows to hold up the canopy. The common things to see are the tail lights (which hang underneath) are broken or gone all together and rust. As far as "gotcha's" I will let you know in time this is the first one I have ever purchased.

Alert | The only real concerns I can see with military trailers in the servicing or lack there of. The trailers we had in our unit were always the forgotten step-childeren of our equipment. Operators never did PMCS on the trailers and drivers always forgot to undo the parking brakes while they were driving away. They sit for along period of time with the brakes set and freeze. I'm pretty sure the only time we packed the bearings on our trailers is when we were putting new bearings in after the old ones had seized up....I know, I know bad maintenance guy! | | Chuck Norris doesn't always drink beer, but when he does, he has the Dos Equis guy serve it to him in a dress!

Alert | Well got it home today, now the fun begins. This is a quite a large trailer the tires seem to be 35s and the bed is 6X8. My first big task is going to be to loose the old army split rim wheels and also get some new tires. I might ditch the entire axle altogether. I also plan to narrow and shorten the box. more to come.... -C

Alert | Is it that much wider than the trooper? Looks in awesome shape anyway..I can only imagine how much more camping stuff you can bring with you after seeing your set up with just the stuff in the trooper ..lol | | Chuck Norris doesn't always drink beer, but when he does, he has the Dos Equis guy serve it to him in a dress!

Alert | I applaud your recycling a usable trailer. But I just have to ask...since you are getting rid of the rims and tires, axle and making the box smaller...why not get a M416? It is so much closer to the trailer you will eventually have when done and can't have been that difficult to obtain.

I would love to get a 416 if ya have one for sale.. or know of one! I searched high and low for one actully had found one but I waited about an hour to long to go get it.... SOLD. So I became inpacient and tired of searching and waiting so I made a bid and won. Also I figure it will be a good project for me to get some welding/fab practice on. It is towable the way it is I would just be affraid to take it of anything other than graded gravel roads and maybe some wide open two track. -C

Alert | Hey Caleb,
Congrats on the trailer. I was thinking of bidding on one myself but I've been accused of bringing too much stuff as it is... though they do seem to appreciate me bringing ice cream and fireworks . I think I'll look for a skinnier vehicle. It was great traveling with you and Jen.

Alert | A little update: Got a chance to work on the trailer a bit on Sunday. Spent several hrs grinding out welds to remove the sides of the trailer, after they were off they were cut down to just under five feet. I wanted it to be a bit longer but it worked out easier with the way the trailer is made. -C
