A note on the locks. In Rovers they are handy because you always open them the normal way. But when we had the fridge in the back seat of the Passat for our various 1 week trips, we always took the lid off the hinges to open it. So in our case, the locks would be annoying (even with the push latch, as you'd really have to stoop into the car to get at it). I know my situation most likely won't match Rick's with his fancy mini-van and 2WD Rover, but thought I'd throw it out there for others to consider.

True, Peter, but I'd still recommend a lock be a part of the kit whether it's used regularly or not. Trying to line up the hinge posts [on the ARB version, anyway] can be pretty frustrating - particularly if it's dark and/or the vehicle is in motion. Luckily, the hinge locks come off as quickly as they go on.

(btw, Peter, I think I owe you a call about the roof tent. Oops, will do so next week if you are around.)

A comment on the hinge lock: several people have observed that with the hinge lock there ends up being a very small misalignment of the lid which causes it not to seal perfectly. This can cause the fridge to run more often. I had a hinge lock on mine for a while, but I took it off. I'm a little paranoid to let my fridge run overnight, so I don't want to take a chance.

Sure, Peter. Just rub it in that you have non-bling axle flanges attached to a 110.

Makes me wonder if the hinge locks work better on some brands/models/sizes than others. Or, perhaps the hinge locks have been re-designed of late. FWIW, my fridge is the newer ARB 42qt model (which I believe is identical to Engel's most recent 40L). I've mounted the hinge lock under the left hinge and the shim piece under the right hinge. With the lock and shim installed, the lid doesn't appear to have any of the alignment problems you mentioned nor have I seen an increase in running time. Perhaps I'm just lucky.

Anybody looked at Dometic fridges?  I like the idea of being able to run them off propane as well as 12V/120V.  For $399 at Camping world, it seems like a viable alternative although a bit smaller.  Stll it fits 8 2liter bottles which is plenty for me.

Certainly not as sexy as the ARB, but evidently will run 3 days on a small propane bottle.  Anyone researched this?
