i was wondering how long i could store tents, sleeping bags, etc in their compression stuff sacks assuming i used them once a month or so?  i've heard it's bad practice to store them in such things long term so during the winter they are in less restrictive packaging.  i'm lazy and i was hoping that between camping trips, it's ok to store my stuff the way it would be during a trip.  thanks!

depends on what you are storing. You can leave a dry, clean tent in a stuff sack indefinitely. You just don't want mildew growing in there. A sleeping back will lose its loft after a while and won't insulate well. You can leave tent stakes in a stuff sack for something like 3 millenium or so. :-)

Keep things dry before you put them in and don't keep stuff that is supposed to loft in a stuff sack for longer than necessary.

i forgot about the loft issue with the bags...makes sense. i forgot to clarify that the gear would be dry and relatively clean before storage.

i was afraid that the stuffage would put some sort of stress on the fabric or something. you know, like a small place for the tent gnomes to breed and whatnot.

how long do you think the sleeping bags and pads could stay in their stuff sacks?

oops, i forgot to be more clear: i meant compression sack, not just a regular old stuff sack.

same info applies

Get big, big bags for the sleeping bags to keep the dust off. As for compression, tents will be fine. I used to store ours that way.
Sleeping pads should be treated like sleeping bags. leave the valves open and in a mainly dry area.

As for how long a sleepining bag should be in a compression sack.....matters if it's down or not.  synthetics that are think dont' need as much loft, but down really likes to be lofty.  I usually try not to keep my down stuff compressed for more than a week.
