Alert | yeah, that thing. It doesn't go all the way in any more, so you can't fit a bottle on the end of it.

That happened on my Whisperlite too. I'm not sure what happened. I wonder if it is repairable though (I know you've tried). The thing that is irritating me the most about the Jetboil is that it is wearing out fast and I can't service it myself.
Anyone have a Primus Omnifuel (Heavy unless you get the Ti version)? Craig | | My Overland Adventure Blog

Alert | Here's an interesting article about the new Reactor from MSR. Looks like it bests the Jetboil in some things Craig has mentioned (especially cold weather). But it is pricey. www.msrcorp.com/rock_ice_reactor.pdf

Alert | So, I took my Jetboil back to REI and they exchanged it for a new one. I'm now deciding if I want to keep the Jetboil or sell it and get the MSR Reactor. I've read a few comparisons between the Jetboil and the Reactor and from the sounds of it there are pros/cons to each. The MSR Reactor does better at slightly lower temperatures but it weighs more and doesn't have fine level control (no simmering). Ergonomically, the Jetboil still seems easier to use and pack.
I think I'll probably just keep the Jetboil for the convenience, size, and ease of use it offers. If I go out alone I'll bring the XGKII, but in a group setting where there is always a backup stove, the convenience of the Jetboil is hard to pass up.

Alert | Today I replaced my white gas Coleman Peak1 hiking stove. My parents bought this stove for me when I started Search and Rescue when I was 15yo in 1985. It has been a reliable and easy to use stove for me for 22 years.
I had some flame up issues on my last trip and decided to replace the generator and such. That got me started looking at other options. I have a Jet Boil and a Primus multi fuel already, hove not been totally happy with the primus, and the Jetboil has some limitations as well.
So I was considering all kinds of makes and models and ended up buying a nearly identical stove to my tried and true Peak1, the Coleman exponent multifuel version. It simmers great, runs in nearly all conditions, and I don;t need to learn how to work with a new stove. Plus it fits in my current metal case and already has a home in my gear bun.
Nothing sexy about it, just works. So, for me, I guess this qualifies as my perfect gear. | | 93 LR Defender 110 05 Land Rover LR3

Alert | i've got a cheapo single burner stove that screws onto a small coleman propane tank. it's extremely simple, throws off enough BTU's to re-light a brown dwarf back into a star and packs down in a little carrying case that's an inch thick and about 4" square. i love it. it was a freddy's special I found for about $10.
for backpacking, I'm eager to do some more cooking with my solid fuel stove. It's a fold-up dealio I got at army surplus that burns esbitt tabs. It worked great during some of my snowshoeing outings this past winter. edit: i just wanted to point out some correlations to other conversations ... note the $2 chinese corkscrew in the lower right also, note the can of chili necessitating usage of a porta-potti. thanks for playing | | I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you over the noise of how awesome I am.

Alert | I almost burned down a National Forest trying that. Now I throw it from a separate pre-measured container.
I timed how long it took me to setup and light (ready to cook) both the Jetboil and the XGKII. The Jetboil took 1 minute, the XGKII took 3 minutes. | | My Overland Adventure Blog

This is a great thread. I am ready to go out and buy some of those sorel boots, oh and maybe a Stainless Steel Beer snifter for my Colt 45 Malt liquor. If you want Sorel boots PM me... That's a Columbia brand. | | Tony I'm a Woodcock Johnson achiever!

Alert | I've got to put in a vote for my old-school Coleman stove -- runs on white gas (and probably damn near anything else flammable) Easily field stripped and repaired. Not light, not cool, not raved about in a review on REI.com -- but it hasn't ever left me hungry.
I'm just glad I don't drink wine -- that's $200 towards an ARB locker... | | Tony I'm a Woodcock Johnson achiever!

Alert | A couple of retractions: - Nalgene bottle do absorb flavors. I realized after I posted that I had been using only water in my bottle since I bought it. Here is a nice stainless steel alternative. http://www.reusablebags.com/store/guyot-designs-widemouth-38oz-stainless-steel-reusable-bottle-p-740.html I like the MSR widemouth lids because my water filter screws right on, they are easy to clean, easy to fill, etc. - Jetboil now makes a field maintenance kit. I recently returned mine to REI because the Piezo lighter broke w/in 9 months. Yesterday I saw the $10 field maintenance kit that includes o-rings, jets, and a new piezo lighter. The only downside to the Jetboil now is that it doesn't work in extreme cold. I'm keeping mine as the convenience, size, and overall usability are outstanding on this product. | | My Overland Adventure Blog
