I am still getting used to referring to this place by its proper name after calling Galagher head for so long.  We headed up friday morning of labor day weekend hoping to beat the rush and secure the "good campsite" at the end of the lake.  The Vam Epps pass route was closed due to fire danger but fortunately the Gallaher Head / Hawkins Mt. route was still open.  Upon arriving we were pleased to find that our party had the lake all to ourselves.

The weather was the usual mix of clouds rolling through with sun in between.  The night time temps dropped like they always do and the wind came on strong.  By morning the sun was back out.

The only other visitors were three dirtbike riders on KTMs from the Teanaway side and a lone Toyota Tundra that came in late Friday and left early Sat. and stayed at the smaller campsite near the trail.  One of the guys on a Motorcycle had flopped his bike on the clutch cover and punctured it.  Luckily thye found our camp just in time and we were able to stop the oil from bleeding out with some good old JB Weld!

Other than that, it was just another fun and relaxing trip to Gallher and back!

I'll post pictures soon!

John,

I think the route up from the Teanaway motorcycle only. Do you know if it was ever a through road?

Craig: You are correct! The route up to the lake from the Teanaway is and always has been singletrack and is only opened to hikers, mtn. bikers, horses and motorcycles. We came up via the good ol' Fortune Creek trail.
