Tom Lowell and I took off Saturday evening after I got off work for an overnighter scouting run on the mountains south of Highway 20, roughly south of Concrete, WA. Looks like there are many more logging roads to explore but we did get a feel for the area.

Craig, can you open a gallery for the photos? I'll upload the rest in there.

Looks like you had much better weather than I did! It's really nice up there when the sun is out. The views of Mt. Baker are amazing.

Did you run FS Road 17 all the way through?

Started at the north end of 17 and headed south, took a side trip and camped on 1755, then 17 to 18 until the slide stopped us, then 1820 to the end of it and back to 17, up 1705 and back, then east out on 17. So, yes, we did 17 all the way. The plan was to go through to the south on 18 but it was blocked. Also didn't make it to the top of 1705 as there was snow up there. Made it through the first patch but the second one was maybe 100 yards long and maybe two feet deep and crusty. I'm sure if Grant was along he would have made a run at it...

Your SPOT messages looked like you were really out there in the boonies. Glad you had a nice trip. It's a bit odd, but I see a picture of Tom's van in the woods and I can't help looking for Mrs. Roeper.

Brian - I made it to the same spot you did on 1705. Being alone, w/o any recovery gear, I decided to call it quits too.

When you are coming up from the NW side, there is a side road that has a bunch of switchbacks, then runs parallel to 17. It's more "alpine" feeling. Lot's of really nice campsites w/o so many trees, and sweeping views of the North Cascades including Mt. Baker. There's an old mine up there too. We'll have to head up there together some afternoon and check it out.
