II was born without the gene that allows one to ask intelligent questions in stores so that one can learn and then make intelligent choices. I'm the guy who always buys something only to find out that the new version with the new software comes on the market the next day.

I've borne up under this handicap by learning to ask others what they would buy. That leads me to my question about the Garmin.

I need a GPS that I can use for both driving and backbacking, I need to be able to relate it's information to maps and I suspect that I would also get an external antenna if one was available. I see my use of a GPS as basic at best. I want to learn how they work but will probably use it only it get my butt out of a jam.

I saw on this forum that the Garmin 60 CSx seemed to be a good unit.

Can anybody recommend for or against it?

Thanks for your time.

I generally like mine, but think the software user interface is really clunky and unintuitive.

Technically it does a lot, and does it well.

After asking this same basic question, I'd say the answer is "It's a good choice". It has some features that are useful to some and not important to others, like the ability to use an external antenna, and the ability to load maps into memory vs. only on a card. It has a color screen, which to me is much better than B/W.

I went to REI and looked at a bunch of options, including the 60CSx, Magellan, etc. The clerk at the Portland store was well versed in the various units and their features, so talking to him was useful.

i have a friend that has the same garmin and he likes it a lot. the display is easy to read. i know that garmins are generally better rated than their magellan counterparts and tend to have better support. that being said, i really like my magellan crossover. it is kinda spendy though (mine was free :) ) and while it comes with topos, the more detailed ones are not available yet. the ability to run an external antenna seems like a good idea to me.

another alternative is to do what craig did and build an in car computer than runs mapping software. that would definately be the most powerful option.

Thanks for the input guys. It looks like the Garmin will do the job.

Now I'm headed for the net to see where the best price is.
