Hi Gene,

The GPS antenna is built in to the flip out paddle. It works fine for me when in the RAM mount as pictured. When I'm inside a building the external antenna does pick up better. There is a tiny little round external port on the edge of the paddle. I bought my setup used off eBay but came with the external antenna too.

The tiny screen at 1024x768 is useable but not something I'd want to have to do serious work on for hours. Works great for GPS and Navigation though.  The RAM mount was well worth the $48.

Thanx for the info! Can I ask a couple of extra questions from you? I'd like to know if the GPS works well in heavy cover? Also I want to run some extras GPS stuff on this unit, Garmin's Waypoint and Trip manager w/TOPO maps, and Craigs Overland software (soon as they get-subliminal hurry if your reading Craig- pressed). I'm not worried about Craigs stuff as it sounds awesome, but do you know if Garmin stuff works well with this GPS? Is it hard to find the device when connecting within the program?

Since it doesn't have a dvd drive I was planning on using their connector cable which says it will work to access drives on other computers to load software. Have you tried this and if so does it work well?

Thanx in advance for your help! I already have the Ram mount. But I have the single suction mount, I figured that if the bottom is resting in the change slot on the D2 dash to support weight that it should be just fine for securing it in place.

I figured I'd post a few pics of my setup now that it's all up and running.

This one shows the GPS Antenna location on the dash:

Nice install Larry - Now you need to field test it

Sorry for the delayed response Gene - wow - I obviously didn't get the memo.

First, it does work well in heavy cover, though I did see it get confused once in a fairly impossible condition. The trees were over 100' and very dense. The dot just jumped around on the screen before it settled down and got back on the trail.  I plugged in the external antenna after that and had no problem at all.

I haven't tried it with any Garmin software. Though I think I will need to if I want to do better track editing.

I have used the USB for external HD transfer and it was fast enough. It has wireless networking built-in so it would be easy enough to setup a wireless network another computer and share it's CD/DVD drive. There are USB DVD drives too but the usage wouldn't be enough to warrant me buying one.

The suction mount should work. I stuffed a thin piece of dense foam rubber under mine to keep it from vibrating against the dash. Big potholes and a run of washboards can make a mess out of a tidily packed truck unless lashed down.

I just got back from a 2600 mile trip to Southern Utah for the Land Rover National Rally. I'm pretty content with everything at this point. The mount is nice and stable for a flexible mount.

That's a pretty good test!

How was the rally? oops  - almost hijacked the thread. I guess that should be a trip report question. It would be fun to hear something about it though.

The new Samsung

Q1EX-71G looks very good for Overland Navigator.  Cost is sub $800 (I saw it for $729 w/ a quick google search).

A review:  http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/samsung-q1ex-71g.aspx Note that the battery life issue they indicate to be an issue for warehouse floor workers isn't an issue when plugged into a vehicles 12v receptecle.

I have a customer who is using one of these and he reports that performance-wise, Overland Navigator works well with it.  It has an integrated SIRF III GPS, is slim, and low cost for the UMPC form factor.

Hello from Minnesota.

I'm using my R2H here for email my wife and kids back in WA, and its working great. the high def screen setting is a bit hard to read at time, but still very useful.

I've also used it with DeLorme's software, but not with Craig's yet....still waiting to upgrade the hard drive. Has anyone done a HD upgrade on one of these yet?

Hope to see some of you guys in person in September.
