I thought I would mention this in case some of you haven't heard.  Garmin just released 1:24K Topo maps for WA and OR.  Unfortunately they are tied to an SD card so you can't load the mapset on all your devices, or even older devices that don't support the SD Media...

If I end up getting the Garmin Oregon I might go ahead and get this mapset as well.  It's about $86 at Amazon right now, retail is $99.  Also the Garmin Oregon is only $476 at Amazon as well.

Do the maps only cover national parks? That used to be the case.

No the new ones cover the entire state (s). Supposedly comparable to the USGS maps.

Larry, when you say "tied" to an SD, does that mean they cannot be added to an existing SD? I've got a big card in my 60CSx that has all my stuff, I'd hate to have to swap cars in and out.

I think they come on an SD card and cannot be moved off of it, nor can anything be added to it. Like you this is a bummer as I have all the Topo and City Navigator maps on a 2GB SD card with 1GB free. I would be able to put all maps for a 5 state region on one SD card if they allowed it.

My guess is they will have to change something going forward. $100 for two states of 24K maps gets awefully expensive if you want to get them for a region. Also, I think there might be hacks for removing them from the cards but haven't really looked into it yet.

Well this Christmas Santa brought me Garmin Nuvi 750. I diligently proceeded to acquire 24k map set for PNW. Although Garmin doesn't list this product as compatible I had good suspicion it is. Indeed works just fine. Only requirement is to deselect default map set in settings. Unlike I've heard of earlier models it is still fully capable of navigating to point of interest, feature etc with voice guidance, while displaying topo map with elevation profile etc.

Only limited downsides so far I found compared to Nuvi 500 and Garmin Oregon series are: 750 is unable to display shaded relief so one has to understand a little topo map reading and it doesn't have some features like compass (I prefer to carry a real one anyway), some silly geocaching game, there might be others I'm not aware of course, but I list them as nifty features rather than necessity.
On plus side 4.3" screen gives marginally better view of map for browsing. It seem to be pretty quick for rendering than scrolling in browse mode even with detailed elevation profile enabled.
Also 750 has capability to display tracklog so obviously it can be pretty useful to backtrack. I bet relief shading wouldn't be a big deal for Garmin to add but I doubt they can be persuaded to do so.

On side note I recently found this interesting info on  how to add contour lines to your default map set for Garmin units

Has anyone actually tried copying the 24K topo files off the default SD card onto another card to see if they work? Is the included SD card protected in some fashion that keeps you from copying the files? Just curious. Like Larry and Tony, I have plenty of available space on my current card and don't want to switch cards all the time.

This is the only thing that has stopped me from purchasing the new map set.

Rick I googled that very problem. I don't think there is an easy way to do that at this time. However I'm sure someone will hack it and eventually get it to work. I would gladly buy the maps if I could add them to my current mapset.

Maybe we should all shoot Garmin an email, one thing about them, they seem to listen and support their users quite well.

I'd be curious to know what type of security it has on it. For example, could I access it through a share on the Linux VM on my laptop and bypass the security simply because I'm avoiding the Window's permissions structure?

Who knows. It seems like there should be a way to do it. I can't see Garmin investing too much money or technology in keeping the files locked to a specific piece of media. Particularly, when the first customer pays $100 bucks for the maps, drops his SD card in a mudpuddle, and loses his mind because he was restricted from making a backup copy of the data he rightfully owns access to and it is dead in a mud puddle on a trail somewhere.

Here are couple picks what it looks like on screen.

3D view with navigation - shaded releif or 3D would be nice. Should have zoomed out though.

True north view. I like it. Pretty usefull I would say.

Anyway should work on pretty much any Garmin

OK. For heck of it copied maps over to different SD card. Copies fine. GPS loads them then doesn't display anything but "can't unlock maps" so it needs unlock code with I guess is somehow tied to the card.

Thanks for taking the time to copy them and report the result, Alex. I'm sure there is a way to get them off that SD card. Hmmmm. Maybe I will go buy a set and experiment.

So you can copy/backup them? I wonder if Garmin would provide an unlock code so that you could load them onto an SD card with all their other maps? That would be an acceptable solution to me.

Yes I believe that's the intention. It copies just fine. I remember stumbling by 10 unlocks limit. You have to call Garmin and I guess you better have had registered that purchase with them.

Update:
They just released the 24K maps on DVD. Coverage for PNW includes WA, OR, NV and CA. I decided to annie up and order it. $139, whew! not cheap but hopefully more accurate than the current Garmin Topo maps. Probably have them next week and report back on the detail. Maybe I'll figure out a way to do a screenshot of an area we're all familiar with so you can compare the two yourselves.
