No No, your clearly misreading it.  That map looks perfectly flat to me.

Me thinking those are neither but rather islands of what is now Indonesia. They didn't know either about Australia or NZ. Those were not discovered (visited by Europeans) until early 17th century

Cool stuff. Talk about serious overlanding.

remember that by this time Marco Polo and his brother (?) had made their trip to China and back. Part of the return trip was by sea. I'm sure the Polos
brought back to Europe a lot of information about the topography, coastlines, ports, etc., of the time. Still, this takes nothing away from the creators of this map.
What a monumental work. Gotta love good science!

Notice too that there is an Iceland, but no Greenland. Or perhaps what I am thinking is northern N. America is actually what they knew of as Greenland.

Before the collapse of the Viking settlements in Greenland, the Catholic Church had a Bishop stationed there. Initially there was a lot of communication
between Europe and those settlements.

Thanks Craig, totally fascinating.
I studied cartography in college and still am amazed at the spacial accuracy and geographic representation that these early explorers put together, especially considering their lack of tech as we know it.

any data on the map?  Haha, nevermind.  I just figureed out that the bold underlined thingy is a link!  Ha, silly technopolitains, what'll they think of next
