i was wondering if any one out there has experimented with turning a normal laptop into a tablet pc. i am looking at my laptop and it seems as simple as removing the screen and flipping it around and reattaching, finding a way to extend the screen wiring, and getting one of the devices that allowes you to use a stylus. i would guess the wiring will prove to be the most complicated part. i am some what electricaly inclined but the actual programing side of a computer is pretty forgien to me. if i am out of my mind let me know. my intent is to turn my laptop into a tablet that i can mount in my rig and run Overland Navigator and ARPS and all of that.

thought i would add what my computer is. Acer Extensa 4420-5239

You need special type of screen to use stylus. Wiring is not a problem. but in the end you are getting laptop with flipped screen not a true tablet you would need external input device like track ball. It would be just as easy to mount screen separately. aka carputer.
Any more you can get oldish used tablet off ebay fairly cheap. Heck you can get off lease shock, spill, vibration proof Panasonic Toughbook tablet for $300-400 now.

Terrance,

I wouldn't do it. Having tinkered with all sorts of carputers, and used many different types of computer in the vehicle itself, I don't think you'll ever be satisfied with the result. Sell what you have, and purchase something used from a seller with a high volume and a lot of positive reviews. Surf around and see what some of the latest touchscreen UMPCs cost too. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, you don't want a pen/stylus based input system. In the car, you'll want a touch screen that will allow you to use your finger for control.  The kit you linked to is touchscreen, though I don't know how good it is.

Wow, guess I need to shop around a bit.  I'm looking for a new laptop for myself and figured with the holidays coming up I might find a good buy.  I keep thinking I might eventually mount one back in my truck again so I'm taking this into consideration.

BTW, I've bought quite a bit of computer electronics off of eBay.  Just be sure to research the seller and you should be fine.  Unfortunately this is ultimately the risk and probably explains why things are considerably cheaper there as well.
