Does anyone have a batch of icons I can use on my Garmin? It's got a lot of standard ones, but I want to make some more specific ones.

What format do they need to be in? True icons in .ico format, or are they gif/svg/???.

If you want to create your own icons for your custom POIs, it is possible According to Garmin's help file:

"POI Loader can associate customized bitmaps (.bmp) with the points in a data file if the .bmp has the same file name as the data file. For example, a customized bitmap named "Speed_30.bmp" would be associated with all the the points in the file named "Speed_30.csv" or "Speed_30.gpx." Bitmaps must be saved in the same directory as the associated data files. Your Garmin GPS device may have image size requirements. Most compatible Garmin products work well with icons that are 24x24 pixels or smaller. Bitmaps that do not meet those requirements may appear distorted when viewed on the unit's screen. Custom bitmaps can also include a transparent color. Most compatible Garmin products use magenta (RBG 255, 0, 255) as the transparent color. "

I have a truetype font that contains all of the National Park Service mapping symbols. You could use MS Paint and make 24x24 bitmaps for any of the symbols you want.

Most of the ones I have can be found at http://www.mapsymbols.com/symbols2.html. They are inside of zip files for different ArcInfo/ArcView GIS extensions.

I'll e-mail you the NPS fontset.

thanks Craig, I'll take a look. I just downloaded 900MB of maps and for some reason it's not reading off the card and just internal memory. Hmmmmm....maybe I'll read the manual at some point.
