With all the roof tents being purchased these days, I thought I’d share my solution for off-season storage.  My particular needs were: (1) utilize the area above my parking space in the garage [since the rest of the garage is a bit of a tip] and, (2) allow me to attach/remove the tent with two hands instead of four.

The Racor ProStor Heavylift overhead storage system was the ticket. The system includes support beams with pulleys, winding axle, cables, mounting hardware, hand crank, and a 4’ x 4’ loading platform. I found it at costco.com for around $140 but it might be available elsewhere for less.  There are obviously cheaper storage methods but this unit is solid, installs easily, and works great.   http://www.racorinc.com/products.fx?id=150

The attached picture shows my tent hanging from a slightly modified hoist unit.  Since my tent is close to the original platform dimensions, I simply ditched the platform and added four lift points to the tent base; with slings attached to the lift points, it works like a charm. (Currently, I'm using a Thule system to mount the tent to my external roll cage; the cross bars are semi-permanently attached to the tent base as we have other bars for another vehicle.  We just move the Thule rack towers back and forth as needed.)  The unit is capable of hoisting the tent up/down about 8ft using a winding crank. Since the system is designed to hoist 250 pounds, I should be able to secure a few other items on top of the tent for storage as well.

One additional note: when the unit is not under load (e.g. when the tent is mounted on the truck), the cables will unwind on the axle.  To prevent this, I’ve added weights to each cable end (as seen in second picture) so they are under constant load – with or without the tent - Problem solved.

Highly recommended as a one-stop solution.

i like it. i'd assume the only problem would be having a garage with enough clearance to be able to drive in.

unfortunately, increasing the garage ceiling height or garage door height would run the cost up a bit :-) in my case, the only way i'm able to get my truck in the garage with roof tent mounted is by airing down the rear tires to 7psi just before entering the garage. that seems to do the trick - just barely. unfortunately, i already have a garage compressor so i can't use that as an excuse to buy a power tank. d

but you can't take the garage compressor with you. ergo, powertank. or, go the CB way and buy a CO2 tank from the beveragefactory.com and build your own. i'm testing mine this weekend. cross yer fingers.
