10/30/2007 8:54 AM Alert

I've made verbal handshakes with a guy for his 93 RRC. I would drive it home but there is no windshield in it and no license.

I was going to rent a car dolly or trailer but I thought someone in the group might have one.

you don't need a car dolly all you need is some ski goggles and a temporary plate ($14 DMV) sounds like a fun drive :)

Pictures? Of the truck or the squit behind the wheel? ha ha

I'm bringing it home Saturday and I'll take a snapshot or two. I'm going to attempt to build it into a nice looking (and functioning) expedition rig. That should be good for generating an entire album of photos if the project works out. ... if not I'll have a great parts machine.

Todd,  no way. . . yet. But I did see an 87 RRC for $750 on craigslist. It basically needed an ignition switch, some linkage replaced and a tuneup. There's also a guy with 89' parts in Everett http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/pts/468594301.html but that may be a little far North.

Craig, you are understanding my insanity. After I taking the car dolly back I took some time to fiddle with the engine. It ran with difficulty idling and would stall after 10-15 seconds of running ok. Many starts later the engine was warm enough to give it a mild "Italian tuneup". After belching soot it smoothed right out. Now it sounds like a proper rover V8 with an Isky cam.I think when the truck rolled it spent about an hour upside down so its understandable that oil got into some weird places.

Woo Hoo and Uh Oh. So now I have this sweet running 4.2 V8 I'm having a little anxiety about just doing a diesel transplant.
I'll probably get over it. Like when my 3.9 goes and I need to swap. OR when fuel is $10/gallon and I still want to go overlanding.

Meanwhile the Mercedes 5-cyl TD I bought to learn on is amazing. I'll start a new thread for that.

Do the Diesel. DO THE DIESEL. I love mine so far. And I need another buddy since Kevan hasn't taken the plunge yet.

Met a guy today wearing a Unimog shirt. I made a friendly comment and he said he had dozens of them and kinda blew me off. Saw him again in the parking lot and when he heard the diesel in the RRC he stopped cold, looked at it funny, and got really friendly all of a sudden.

Turns out he works for Freightliner (Daimler) on the Unimog group. He asked me a bunch of questions, found out it was registered, then asked me if I would sell it. I squirmed a bit and told him I only had it for 2 weeks. he pressed and I told him what I had into it, and that I would need well more than that to even consider it. He seemed fine with that and told me to drive it for a few weeks and get back to him, or whenever I was ready to sell. He climbed into his CRD liberty and drove away.

Granted there is only a small group of people wanting diesel Rovers, but the ones that do, want them badly. I am starting to think it was a great investment.

I bet the Mog guy does get a few questions when he wears the shirt. Morris Yarnell used to own a Unimog but sold it and bought his current Pinzgauer. More comfortable and still goes anywhere. BTW, I'm trying to pick a date for a meet & greet EVENT in Edmonds or Kingston before the end of the year to meet him..

You're right Todd. There are some serious diesel adherents out there and things are heating up. I hope to meet you and your TDi'd Rover pretty soon.
Since I haven't accumulated enough points for a new TurboDiesel Pinz or Land Rover I'm just going to build something myself. I'm definitely doing a diesel and have been looking at the mercedes OM617 or even an OM603 since it is very similar. Craig pointed me to a guy at seriestrek.com who makes the adapter plate for the bell housing. It won't be until next spring when I can really get started doing anything though. I need a good body cuz  mines shot. Er, Uh I mean the truck body of course. Rolling over down a 150' embankement was a little rough on the exterior but the driver walked away with only a bruise from the seatbelt. So Maybe I'll just buy a bulkhead, body panels and weld up my own attachement points. Mehhh!  Galvanized frame. Mehhh! First things first.

As for this weekend, I'm working on my "biodiesel processing plant".

and for any Rover build, yes I'm taking pictures . . .
